"The bell. It was already time to part , to go to bed. The bell regulated everything" (Wiesel 72) blue book. Adds to the subject of dehumanization as the bell forces them into a structure they can not fight against. The bell also inevitably brings the Jews back to their harsh realities.

"What are You, my God? I thought angrily. How do You compare to this stricken mass gathered to affirm to You their faith, their anger, their defiance?" (Wiesel 66) (blue book). Everyday, Elie loses more and more faith in God. He starts to be angry and hate Him. Elie loses hope and faith because God does nothing but let them suffer. This is an occurring theme.

"The bell regulated everything. It gave me orders and I executed them blindly" (Wiesel 73) (blue book). The bell can symbolize the power that the Nazis' have over the Jews. The Nazis' can just ring a bell and the Jews will do whatever they tell them too. This symbol can relate to the idea of dehumanization in the book. By ringing the bell and giving orders to the Jews, the Nazis' are treating them kind of like dogs.

Eli loses more an more faith but this moment seems like the greatest renunciation so far.

They praise Your name"(Wiesel 68) Blue book. As shown throughout the book, the continuation of his suffering is the continuation of his loss of faith. It shows how he believes that God's indifference is a sign that God is not there, and if he were real, He would not allow this suffrage for people who are so devoted to Him.
