In the Webster Central School District, there are major discrepencies that have to do with the dress code. The discrepencies include: where to find the Code of Conduct, wording of the dress code, enforcement of the rules, unfair content of the dress code, and consistancy of the dress code throughout the schools. These issues need to be fixed because the result of them is unhappy students, parents, and in some cases, faculty members. These issues can also cause some people to feel discriminated against.

Interviews: Mr. Gumina and Mr. Benz

• Mr. Gumina said that communication is key when it comes to enforcing the dress code. This led me to think more about better ways to get people more informed on what the specific rules of the dress code are.
• Mr. Benz said multiple times that he thinks that student opinion should be greatly considered when creating a dress code. This helped me to think about how to get more student involvment in my activism.

For my activism, I worked with Mr. Benz in order to get students together in a meeting to talk about changing the dress code. There have been two meetings, that unfortunately I have not been able to attend. However, Mr. Benz is talking to me about maybe having another student meeting and he is setting up a meeting with the board in order to discuss the issues with the dress code and how to go about in changing it.

Obviously, since we are all graduating, the dress code in Webster Schools does not impact us anymore. However, if you are somehow still iinterested in making a change to the dress code, you can attend one of the meetings that Mr. Benz is setting up and voice your opinion about it.

There aren't many examples of laws and legislation that go along with dress code. However, in the supreme court case, Tinker v. Des Moines, the court upheld the free speech rights of students to wear black armbands to protest the Vietnam War. While the supreme court upheld the right, schools all around the country still enforce very strict dress codes.
