It is so true that "bored students create problems". Sometimes my bored students can make it difficult to complete running records or AIMSweb progress monitoring. INBs can help keep these students focused and independent while I complete assessments.

- Too Much Time

I too have found that sometimes INBs can take a lot of precious instructional time as students cut, paste, draw, etc. Some students are very meticulous and I find myself hustling these kiddos along. I'm not sure how best to encourage these students to move along without losing the intended learning target.

+ - ? Not Real World?

I disagree that INBs don't use real world skills. As a college student I had to take tons of notes. I have to take notes in my profession for meetings I attend. Graphic organizers and INBs as a young student helped me to organize my thoughts and taught me to take notes and not just copy from the text. They also taught me to come up with little ways to remember important information such as mnemonic devices or to pair pictures with facts to remember details.

I agree with that wholeheartedly! I have older elementary students who still take an incredibly long time to cut something out or paste something. It makes it seem not worthwhile when you have these students not finishing their work because they are too focused on cutting and pasting perfectly.
-Kaitlin Taub

I set a timer for my students. They have to have all the cutting and sorting finished by the end of the timer. I help a few along by cutting for them.
Sometimes I have them cut and glue the frame as morning work and we complete the lesson together later.
-Amanda Ferraro
