I would give this book the genre of Musical Young Adult Fiction. I say this because the book focuses on the lives of two young people (Mia and Adam). While they aren't adults yet they are close to becoming adults.

In this book, it switches off and on between the present and the past. The book starts in the present. There is a snow day so Mia's family gets the day off school and work. They decide to take a little road trip the their grandparents house because the small amount of snow has started to melt. As Mia's family is traveling, the road is slick and the truck passing them slides into the lane that Mia's family is driving in. This causes a head on collision in which Mia's mom, dad, and eventually Teddy die in. Mia is in a coma but she is having an out of body experience and is able to see what is going on around her. This is where the present/past stories come in. When the past stories are told, it tells about the relationship that Adam and Mia form. It tells how they started dating, what she felt, things they went through, how much love there was, things that scared her, and it told how Adam often felt too. When reading about the present, Mia is able to see the operations that go on to her body, how Adam and Kim try so hard to sneak into the ward that Mia is being held in, who sees her body, Mia is able to hear what people tell her and ask of her, and Mia is able to feel emotions of hurt, pain, loneliness, and relief at times. Mia remembers her family and recalls some of her favorite memories of them. For example Mia tells the story of when Teddy was born and how strong her mom was. Mia remembers cutting Teddy's umbilical cord and how there was a special connection between them because of that. What I really thought was cool was how each time the past was told, it usually was because it made a part of Mia that couldn't be replaced in any way. The climax of the story is when everyone is able to see Mia's body one at a time. Fist her grandparents see her, then her aunts, uncles, and cousins. Then the important visits come for Mia and this is where she feels the most relieve and stress at the same time. Kim visits Mia first. She shows Mia a picture and tells Mia that she wants Mia to stay more that anything. When Adam comes to see Mia, the out of body version of Mia almost wishes he wouldn't come in. She knows how much he'll want her to stay and how much she'll want to just for him. In the end when he grabs Mia's hand, she puts all of her focus on his hand and Mia wakes up from her coma. This is the end of the story. Mia's recovery and where she goes is in the next book.

Characters

The main character is Mia. She is a skilled cello player. Mia has two parents (Kat and Denny) and a brother (Teddy). She also has a boyfriend who is named Adam. Mia also has a best friend named Kim. These five people are all important supporting characters to Mia's life. Kat and Denny used to be rockers (Denny played in a band and Kat went to all of his shows). Although as they started to have children they give up this desire to be rockers. It is still in them deep down but, they seem to "grow up" and get actual adult jobs. Adam is a rocker and plays in a band as well. Adam is gone a lot which takes a toll on his relationship with Mia. The most difficult time that Mia and Adam go through would be when she applies to Juilliard. This is because it is across the country and Adam isn't sure how well their relationship will work with that long of a distance. Kim originally was one of Mia's worst enemies. They finally fought one day and from that day forward they were best friends. Kim is such a support for Mia in her cello career. Kim doesn't let Mia quit and she pushes Mia to be better.

Setting

The one main setting would be Mia's home which is in Oregon. Mia practices at home, this is where Adam and Mia often hang out, and where Mia often feels safe and sound. The next main setting would be the hospitable in Portland, Oregon. Even though Mia is there for only a day and a half, this is where Mia is in the present during the book. The third setting would be any place that Adam has a concert. This is because Mia often goes to support him and this is the way they see each other through the busy schedule of Adam being on the road so often. The beginning and end settings I would have to say are Mia's favorite places to be.

Conflicts

The first conflict would be a person against self conflict. This occurs when Mia has to choose if she wants to stay or leave. What this is meaning, is Mia has to find the will to live or decide that she wants to die and be with her family. At first Mia wants nothing more to die. She doesn't want to live a life without her family. The thought is to painful. Although Mia wants these things, she doesn't know how to concentrate her feelings into making the decision. This conflict is resolved with Mia finally focuses on holding Adam's hand. This is her making the decision to stay. The second conflict is also a person against self. This also happens with Mia. She doesn't know if she wants to apply to the collage of Juilliard. This is because she doubts if she is good enough and she also knows that it will complicate her relationship with Adam even more than before. The conflict is resolved when Mia submits a recoding that will hopefully give her an audition. This leads to the final conflict of Mia not knowing how to tell Adam that she got the audition for Juilliard. When she finally does tell Adam, he is happy but also a little upset. He feels betrayed and hurt that Mia wouldn't tell him this sooner. Adam is also concerned about the distance that Juilliard will bring. This conflict is resolved when Adam tells Mia (both her body and out of body self) that he will do anything if she stays. The picture represents the first conflict. Mia is talking to her body trying to figure out if she wants to stay or leave.

Theme

In my opinion the theme of this book would be you are loved and have more to live for even if what is most important to you is now gone. Mia's family was so important to her and they were her main source of joy besides playing the cello and being with Adam. It was really hard for Mia to see how many people loved her like she was family. One line from the book that really makes this theme true would be on page 220 and it says ""I do have a point to all this," she continues. "There are like twenty people in that waiting room right now. But we're all your family." She stops now. Leans over me so that the wisps of her hair tickle my face. She kisses me on the forehead. "You still have a family."' I think that we often forget how loved we are to someone who isn't related to us by blood.

I would recommend this book for a five stars. This is because it gives lots of details and feelings of both the past and the present. There isn't a boring part in this book and it always leaves you wanting to read more and more. I would say this is also better than the movie because it does give so much detail and thought.
