Geographical Indications (GIs) are one of the newest forms of intellectual property.
They allow for the registration of product place names, usually for foods and wines.
First introduced in the TRIPS Agreement, the EU has gradually been extending their
reach through bilateral trade and other agreements. GIs have been the subject of
major disputation between the EU and the New World countries, such as the USA and
Australia, where GIs are protected through the trademark system not a sui generis
system. All countries have regional food specialties, and the disputes are around how
governments deal with these.
