If gates are closed, why is there no one present to supervise/open gates when needed? This is especially important in the event of an actual code red. I was told students should head to classrooms, but that is not how a run, hide, defend works. We are not prepared for a real emergency. The person in charge of safety gets defensive instead of working towards a solution when this is brought up.

Safety is most important and the safety team made sure of this first, hands down. There was nothing malicious about how things were handled. I am sure we could learn from this unique experience and continue to improve our protocols and communication in the future. Btw, did we ever have our code red training this year? I don't recall.

Code Red = Run, Hide, Defend

I appreciate the efforts of the safety team keeping us safe.

However, if a Code Red is called, you must follow through with all parts of the criteria, not just some parts. When the gates were closed, the "Run" part of the Code Red was eliminated. For many of us, that is our only option to stay safe. There needs to be a "safe point" off campus where students and staff can run to during a Code Red event and should be practiced during a Code Red (Run, Hide, Defend) drill.

There should be a PD and scheduled drills for this. What if real Code Red is in place, then why don't we have some emergency supplies in the classroom? What if some students really need to use the bathroom? There should be an emergency bucket and tent for this purpose.

Opportunity to learn from 5/13

I am grateful the Code Red was called and we were ushered to safety (even though it should be called Run, Hide, Defend). What I would have appreciated is more communication from admin when the situation changed. Many of my students (myself included) called loved ones thinking this was the worst. However, I still see this as a time to reflect and learn.
1. What is this situation called? Code Red? Run Hide Defend? Everyone should be on the same page.
2. Should we be locking gates during this situation? Doesn't seem safe if we are supposed to be running first.
3. Once we lock our doors, no one should be let in. Where do kids go once our doors are locked? Should they run and hide? What should we be telling our students?
4. I remember we used to be on Remind and when we had these drills, messages would be sent through there. It was very convenient. Could we use that app again for communication?
5. We need buckets and directions for each situation in our classrooms for a sub and in case we are stuck inside long term.
6. We all make mistakes and if a mistake is made, we understand. We are human. Apologies go a long way to show the ability to admit you're human, you made a mistake, and you have the ability to admit it and hopefully, learn from the situation.
7. I think we should all take this as a learning opportunity.

I believe calling a code read was warranted given the events that played out. I am comfortable with the terminology as well. What was confusing was the communication. The event felt downplayed when there was an email sent out saying we were on Code Blue the entire time, then another saying we were on Code Blue most of the time. From the teacher and student perspective, this was a code red for almost the entire hour. That affected us emotionally. The sooner we can hear from the safety team about what is going on, the better. That way we can calm the kids down in our class. Someone else mentioned Remind. I agree that it is a very convenient way to communicate with everyone aside from email.

There needs to be a plan in place for students that get stuck outside of a classroom in case there is a real active shooter on campus. I had several kids come back to my room after the barricade was put up. I told them they should run off campus or run into the restrooms and barricade there. Luckily another classroom door opened up. Students need to really know what to do should they have to barricade in the restrooms. Or they should know what safe space to run to in case they are able to get off campus.

Calling the code red was the correct choice. It should have stayed code red throughout in order to maintain protocol standards for students.
