Chapter V: the strangest birthday party in the world

Next day Eilleem listened in amazement at the plan Grandma had devised to catch the Elf from the birthday candles her fantasy had taken.

- If it always appears when a child makes a wish ... then we have to celebrate a birthday this afternoon.

-But what birthday? Mine has already passed and yours ...

Eilleem suddenly shut up. He had no idea when his grandmother's birthday was. Shyly he looked up in shame and before asking the question, Grandmother responded naturally.

- February 29. A day that only comes every four years. Why do you think I keep myself so well? I only turn years when it's leap ...

The girl looked at her intrigued Grandmother. Was what he said true? The old woman always spoke in that enigmatic tone that it was difficult to know when she was serious and when joking ...

- But this dates doesn't matter. We are going to "invent" a birthday, it doesn't have to be true, it is worth it.

So Grandma Luci and Eilleem started to make a delicious chocolate cake. When it was finished, Grandma began looking for candles in a very old furniture, dark wood and something cochambrosa that seemed about to become dust. He opened one of the drawers and began to take out a mountain of objects: rusty silver teaspoons, sugar envelopes, crumpled napkins, a yellow sheet notebook, bottle corks, keys that seemed to have never opened a door, old calendars with cats on the cover, lemon candies, recipes cut from a magazine ...

- But Grandma ... how are you going to find something here? What a mess!

- Shut up girl, don't let me down, I'm about to get it.

And soon, he gave a shriek of satisfaction.

- Here it is!

It was a tiny bag where there was a group of colored candles, quite consumed. They took them out of the bag and counted them. There were twelve. They took a few and put them in the chocolate cake and went to the lounge. From one of the table drawers, Grandma Luci took out a white tablecloth with yellow embroidery. He set plates and glasses and prepared to light the candles.

- Just a moment! - Eilleem suddenly shouted - Are we just going to be you and me? What a birria birthday, nobody will believe that.

- And who do you want to invite?

- Well, I don't know ... but a birthday with two people ... What a roll!

They followed the plan they had thought and Eilleem before blowing the candles asking for the wish "I wish to recover my fantasy". The following day, she woke up and quickly noticed that her plan had worked, regained her fantasy and felt very happy for the rest of her life.

The day Eilleem made a wish, the one who fulfilled it was an elf so Eilleem and Grandma Luci understood that if they wanted to find the birthday candle elf, they should be discreet and not tell anyone anything.

- We have to get rid of your parents - Grandma Luci said rubbing her hands thoughtfully.

Convincing Dad to let them spend the weekend together was not easy. He knew his mother well and knew that he was very independent and had never paid much attention to his grandchildren.

- Why suddenly this interest? I know you and I know you're up to something.

- My son, don't be suspicious. I have simply realized that Eilleem is almost a little woman and I feel like spending time with her.

With these arguments, both finally got Mom and Dad to accept that Eilleem spend the weekend with Grandma Luci.

- What a thrill! All weekend away from home - Eilleem exclaimed when they were on the street - Are we going home by bus?

- By bus? - asked the strange Grandmother - But if I have the car right there ...

- I didn't know you were driving, Grandma. You had never shown me your car.

- You never asked me, dear. Look, it's that one.

He pointed to a dilapidated green car parked on the front sidewalk. Eilleem smiled in pleasure and sat down happily with her Grandmother. Inside it smelled like dust and damp. It was the oldest car he had ever seen.

- But where have the letters gone? - Eilleem asked scared when checking that all the books in the room were empty.

Without knowing very well what to do, Eilleem began looking for the lost letters around the room. He opened all the drawers. She looked in the closet and finally she reached down on the floor and searched under the bed.

That was when the door to the room opened and Grandma Luci appeared. Eilleem, Grandma Luci had always seemed a bit odd. It was not like the rest of the grandmothers. He always wore striped pants and shirts. His fingernails painted red and his hair white and very shiny, cut to medium length. He had a very serious and serious voice, which got a little scary, that, although, according to Dad, before marrying he had worked as a clown in a circus and she had traveled all over Europe.

- “Can you know what you do there?” Said grandma.

Hearing Grandma Luci's loud voice, Eilleem got out of bed, thinking what excuse she was going to make up to explain why she was under the bed. But she didn't have time. As soon as the grandmother saw Eilleem's face she jumped and screamed in fright.

- “But what the hell happened to you? You're older than me” said granma.

Eilleem understood that unlike Mama, Grandma Luci could observe her just as she looked: aged. That is why he had no choice but to tell him everything that had happened since the birthday candles were blown.
