She worked hard to fulfil her father’s wishes, and by the time she was twenty-two, she come out with her first collection of poems, ‘A Change of World’.

‘Diving into the Wreck’ won Rich the 1974 National Book Award for Poetry.

She was awarded the ‘Ruth Paul Lilly Poetry Prize’, the ‘Elmer Holmes Bobst Award in Arts and Letters’ from NYU, and the ‘National Poetry Association Award for Distinguished Service’ to the Art of Poetry.

There is an autobiographical element in the poem that reflects the deep recesses of Adrienne Rich’s mind and also the social mould in which she was thrown as a result of which she gives full vent to her feminist feelings in Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers. Important theme to be running in the poem is the male-dominated society which leaves women with no choice but marry and be resigned to her fate whatever it is and wants woman to be hush regarding her rights. Women are taken as nothing but commodity to be possessed by other. Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers is a fine example of feminist poetry, which holds a banner of protest against the patriarchal society.

1.
The poem “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” by Adrienne Rich is about a married woman who is portrayed through her creations. She knits tigers to show the type of person she truly longs to be; vigorous, free, and valiant- all the characteristics that women aren’t allowed to be. Aunt Jennifer knows that even when she passes away her art would live on and it will show who she’s always been, thus creating a theme of immortality throughout the poem.
2.
While the poem is theoretically dazzling, the subjects that art endures beyond human life and that suffering may be trade in through art are almost not original. Rich, however, uses a resourceful image to reorganise these conventional themes in a new way and even hints, in the image of Aunt Jennifer weighed down by an oppressive marriage, at the feminism that would invade her later work. Yet the poem remains quite impersonal. The reader sees Aunt Jennifer but is not at all aware of the voice of the poem’s narrator. For the reader, it is as though the picture is framed by an invisible hand, in contrast to Rich’s later work, where the reader cannot help being aware of the poet’s personal presence.
3.
Yes, I sympathise with Aunt Jennifer. Aunt Jennifer wins all our sympathy. She works tirelessly to create her tigers. The Tigers prance across the screen fearlessly. The speaker feels great sympathy for Aunt Jennifer. She says that while Aunt Jennifer will be lying dead in her grave, her Tigers will still go on prancing proud and unafraid.
