Challenges faced: lower income groups are unable to compete fairly with the upper class<br><br>Possible factors:</div><ul><li>Meritocracy promises equality and opportunity, but the higher class is able to afford expensive, private education, tuition and enrichment programmes that will add to a child’s merit when applying for school, internships and jobs,. Thus, it may give the upper class the upper edge and actually widen the social divide&nbsp;</li><li>over-reliance on academic credentials as a proxy for merit, particularly in the early stages of a person’s career.</li><li>increase in GST</li><li>a widening income gap leading to the younger generation and lower income groups being priced out of the property market</li><li>Children born in the upper class get an edge when parents can tap a strong social network and devise strategies such as polishing extra-curricular talents and preparing impressive portfolios for their children.</li><li>Streaming in the parent’s generation means that the parents who came from less prestigious streams are now parents and are less equipped to prepare their children for the challenges of todays education system&nbsp;</li><li>Streaming in our education system institutionalised existing inequalities by segregating and producing a generation of students with very different educational outcomes, incomes and social networks</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>
