Students might focus on the way in which texts explore the beliefs and values nurtured in particular societies and the ways they shape individuals, communities and educational systems. They might also explore the tensions that arise when there are conflicts of beliefs and values, and ethics.

In Alice Walker's The Flowers Myop's values, beliefs, and what she has learned allow her to process the sight of the deceased man. Myop is an African American during a time where being an African American was a crime. Due to this it allowed her to develop a very thick skin. She is also a very joyful individual which makes the task of phasing her even harder. So, when she comes across the old, dead body she just continues picking flowers. She also has a lot of respect because she lays down her flowers almost like a memorial for the deceased showing her immense moral values, and kind heart.

In Alice Walker’s short story, “The Flowers,” the text relates to the global issue of beliefs, values, and education. When Myop took a different path, she walked over a dead man on the ground. In that particular society, it can be inferred that people believed in slavery and discrimination against African Americans based on that time period. The author also mentions share cropping, which was right after the Civil War. Myop was innocent and ignorant to those beliefs and about what went around in her community. Education systems back then were not the best, and that behavior probably was not taught. The fact that she realized what she saw, most likely shaped her beliefs and perspective on life.

In the flowers by Alice Walker, She uses her values, beliefs, and education to justify how innocent children in the past and today can come to sudden maturity in an instance. Alice walker does this by using imagery of Myop walking through flowers and enjoying her time, and suddenly stumbles over a dead body which gives Myop a sense of maturity, just as in today's world, children have to deal with sudden instances of tragedy and automatically reach a sense of maturity. Walker is trying to prepare young people that tragedy strikes at any moment and with that comes a wave of issues one must figure out how to handle and attack those issues with maturity.

In every person’s life, there is a point where they must wake up and face reality. In the short story “Flowers” by Alice Walker the belief of racism is brought to the attention of people blinded by it(racism). It portrays a young girl in the time of slavery who faces the harsh reality of the world she lives in, but rather than freaking out or going into panic she simply looks over it. The short story brings to life the issues of that time and how even though the girl saw something so morbid she was not fazed. This coming-of-age story the values and teachings of this time are brought out, and makes people blinded by racism realize that history is repeating itself in a sense of overlooking big matters.

In Alice’s walker's short story “ The flowers”The youth are oblivious to this idea of a beautiful society that is captured best through the idea of belief, values, and education. The young girl is under the impression or belief that the world is nothing but beautiful. This is expressed through imagery and description of the scenery of flowers on an alluring farm. This ideal is placed in the reader’s head and throughout the story, but this belief slowly comes to an end. When Myop steps on the head of a dead man. Our belief system can be changed by our experience.
