Koalas can only live in Australia due to their prefered lifestyle. SaveTheKoalas states "Koalas live in tall open eucalypt (gum tree) forests." Koalas live in gum trees because it prevents them from being caught easily by predators. The only time koalas travel on the ground are when they are traveling to new trees or areas.

Koalas have a very limited diet. SaveTheKoalas states "An adult koala eats between 200 to 500 grams of leaves each day. Koalas eat mainly eucalyptus leaves (gum leaves)." However, eucalyptus is very low in calories, so koalas slow down their metabolism with sleep. Koalas usually prefer the leaves of around thirty-six different eucalyptus species out of six hundred species. Additionally, eucalyptus leaves are poisonous. Though koalas have bacteria in their digestive tracts that can break down the toxins in the eucalyptus leaves, koalas also selectively choose leaves that contain less toxins. Koalas usually do not need to drink, since they get all the liquid they need from gum leaves. However, they occasionally do drink during droughts.

Koalas usually range in size from two feet to three feet, with the male koalas larger than the females. Northern koalas are smaller than other koalas, and they are from twenty to thirty pounds. As shown in the picture, koalas have fur that covers their entire body. They also have nails, opposable thumbs, and pads on their fingers for gripping trees. On their feet, koalas have an appendage that consists of two fused toes. Therefore, koalas can groom themselves. Another toe, which is clawless, is also used for gripping. Southern koalas have thicker fur, most likely to protect from the cooler temperatures.

The koala population has decreased in recent years. Some think that as much as 50% of the population has died in the past six years. Most of the decrease has been caused by the destruction of their habitats
In 1919 to 1930, koalas were hunted for their fur. The huge demand in the market led to the killings of over 2 million.
Today, koalas are most commonly killed by motor vehicles or dogs. The species was added to Australia's threatened species list in 2012.

Reproductive Cycle

Females begin breeding at around three or four. Conception begins when a female hears the bellow of a male. This is necessary to begin the females ovulation cycle. The pouch opens towards the hind legs of the koala, which is different from most marsupials, an adaptation which keeps burrowing marsupials from getting dirt in their pouch. The joey, or baby koala, will be the size of a large jelly bean and cannot see or hear, but it can climb. It will climb from the birth canal directly into the puch. Once the joey is born, just 35 days after conception, it remains within the pouch and dependent on the mothers milk. Then, the mother starts feeding the joey pap. Pap is a specialized form of feces meant to help wean the joey towards eating eucalyptus leaves. The baby feeds regularly on pap, and once it exits the pouch, it starts to eat eucalyptus leaves. The baby will stay with the mother until the appearance of a new pouch. If the mother doesn't mate for that year, the joey will have a greatened chance of survival and stay with the mother for longer.
