Talk for Writing is a fun, engaging and multi-sensory approach developed by Pie Corbett. It helps young children develop their language, confidence and love of stories through speaking, listening, actions, rhyme, repetition and movement.

The approach is being introduced across our school, and in Nursery our focus is on building the important foundations for later reading and writing.

For our youngest children, this means developing their oracy (speaking and listening skills) and helping them to become confident storytellers.

Through traditional tales, familiar stories, rhymes and songs, children learn to join in with repeated phrases, use new vocabulary and retell parts of a story using actions and movement. We use lots of repetition so that children gradually become familiar with story language and begin to use it independently.

At this age, we are not expecting children to write stories. Instead, we are helping them to develop the language, imagination and confidence they will need for writing in the future.

The key idea behind Talk for Writing is simple: if a child can say it, they are much more likely to be able to write it. By giving children lots of opportunities to talk, listen, act, sing and tell stories, we are laying strong foundations for their future literacy journey
