The Lottery Man vs. Man

In "The Lottery", there is Man vs. Man conflict. Tessie Hutchinson has conflict with her husband Bill. When Tessie gets chosen by the Lottery, she is completely abandoned. The story states, "Tessie Hutchinson shouted to Mr. Summers. 'You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair!' ...'Shut up, Tessie,' Bill Hutchinson said." There is conflict between Tessie and Bill because Tessie and Bill's selfishness clash. Tessie believes that the Lottery wasn't fair, but Bill reprimands her. Bill is even expected to throw stones at Tessie. Bill and Tessie have a disagreement, which is an example of Man vs. Man in "The Lottery".

"The Lottery" shows Man vs. Society within its story. There is a conflict between Tessie Hutchinson and the society's obsession with tradition. When a change is merely mentioned, it is immediately shut down. The text says, "'There's always been a lottery,' he added petulantly. 'Bad enough to see young Joe Summers up there joking with everybody.' 'Some places have already quit lotteries.' Mrs. Adams said. 'Nothing but trouble in that,' Old Man Warner said stoutly. 'Pack of young fools.'" The townspeople won't even consider discontinuing the lottery, even if it means killing their friends and family. Conflict arises when Tessie Hutchinson dares to challenge the process of the lottery. She says, "It's not fair," and "We should start over", however all the townspeople tell her to stop complaining. The townspeople stone Tessie because of their own self-preservation, but she tries to go against society to stay alive. There is conflict when Tessie doesn't want to follow the rules of society.

In the Hunger Games, Katniss creates Man vs. Society conflict. When her sister is chosen, Katniss volunteers in her place. This is a new idea to society. Instead of fighting, Katniss tries to fight the system. Katniss is supposed to destroy all of the other tributes, but instead, she forms friendship and alliances. When one of her friends die, Katniss puts flowers on her grave as a public act of defiance against the Capitol. Later in the story, Katniss goes against society by trying to commit suicide instead of killing her friend.
