She is quite innocent and young which means that she doesn't see the reality she lives in and all the bad things around her. She steeps into a dead mans corps and it's only then she sees the whole forrest as a form of graveyard. She starts to see the world as it is and that's why she is named what she is. Because she doesn't know any better and maybe for her own safety.

She has everything she needs and wants.

The flowers at the end: She drops them, perhaps in surprise, or perhaps they now are like "flowers on a grave", a symbol of respect and sorrow. Thoughts of the terrible past. The horrible things that happend to her "kind".

She remembers that she is lucky, and that it has not always been easy to be black in America. She suddenly looks beyond the tip of her own nose.

It is like the girl has been living her life as a never ending summer. Everything has been great her entire life, there has only been calm, safeness and happiness in her little life. Therefore the first part of the story is described quite idyllic and peaceful. She has never really experienced any cruelty, and therefore it is very unusual for her to experience the strangeness of the land. She seems surprised when discovering the man, but more interested than afraid. She doesn't get the seriousness of the situation or what has happened. In the text it says that she just keeps picking flowers, even after the steps into his skull, it is only when she discovers the rope, that has been used to hanging the man, that she realises the reality of the situation and becomes conscious about the racism going on. Now it suddenly doesn't feel like summer anymore.
