Where: The story takes place in the South of the United Stats of America.

Myop sees only the things she is currently thinking about, such as the chickens and pigs. Later the flowers and snakes she is looking for. Eventually she sees the man.

The flowers at the end: She drops them, perhaps in surprise, or perhaps they now are like "flowers on a grave", a symbol of respect and sorrow. Thoughts of the terrible past. The horrible things that happend to her "kind".

She remembers that she is lucky, and that it has not always been easy to be black in America. She suddenly looks beyond the tip of her own nose. (She is young, she has not been forced to deal with the harsh world yet, she is growing up) When she drops the flowers she drops her youth and her innocence and ignorance.

She discovers a wild pink rose which could symbolize purity and innocence, the rose is growing at a horrible scene, and all of a sudden the purity and innocence that the rose symbolized earlier is ruined by the horrific truth of reality.
