Feedback for 8 and 9 April Free Writing Entries

I love how some of you really put in the effort to answer the questions. Remember when you think more, you get into the habit of being more fluency in thinking. Some of you are obviously capable of writing more but you choose not to.

8 April - Do you enjoy reading? Why / Why not? Write about it.

I like how many of you use ARES to answered the questions.

Some of you like Sanjana and Ziru, had an interesting start! They mentioned that reading will take you on an adventure to places that the writer wants to bring you.

Many of you give good reasons to why we need to read, for e.g. expand your vocabulary, get new ideas, improve vocabulary and help you to imagine places we have never been to before.

Some of you even reasoned the reading helps to calm you down!

Many of you shared experiences about the books you have read and how you liked them while some of you talk about your reading routine.

Some of suggest like Sai suggested that how reading is correlated to your writing results and she gave an example for that.

9 April - Look at the poster below. Do you agree with the statement? Why / Why not?

I like how some of you look out for your friends by remind them about their DOs and DON'Ts. For e.g. Some of you remind your friends that their answers should not be too short.

Note that when you do this Free Writing Entry, you use the ideas that were previously shared by your friends and yourself. Remember, learning is a developmental process. For e.g. On 8 April you could have mentioned that reading is important. On 9 April, you can have the same main idea but you elaborate, explain or describe how interesting they could be by saying: Reading is important because the more I read, the more vocabulary, grammar structure and ideas I will know. When I have more general knowledge and also imaginative ideas, I learn to think better and make wiser choices. This is because I can learn from the mistakes of the writers and characters in the book without making the mistake myself.

Note that you need to address the key words in the statement. You need to explain and not just copy the words: 'The more you know' means knowing more infomation and ideas. 'The more you grow' doesn't refer to physical growth. It can be referring to wisdom and maturity for example.

Most of you are doing well and many of you are a lot more confident now! Some of you have also mastered the art of using word stress! For example, Srinidhi have learnt the skills of dragging words to emphasise on an idea. Many of you have also trying to use good words and phrases like 'stone throw away', 'fascinating'. Some of you have also learnt to use some of your friends have shared in class or for Free Writing.

These are some of the parts you need improvement:
- Use ARES
- Think about 2 or 3 main ideas to share and elaborate on each of them. Do not repeat similar points over and over again. (e.g. Reading is good because we can learn new things and it can also bring us to many different place.)
- You CAN have an opposing view to the questions aksed but make sure you know how to elaborate on it.
- Remember to answer the question. Use "I".
- Look at the prompt carefully and talk about relevant ideas only!!!

The connector 'unless' is used to refer to something that will or will not happen depending on whether something else happens. (This sentence can also be found in the 'A Nasty Accident' learning sheet, page 9 learning points)

Definition: except if (used to introduce the case in which a statement being made is untrue or invalid).'

What does this sentence mean? 'Unless Miss 🤬 has a meeting, she will come to the English Wall on time.'

Meaning: Miss 🤬 will come to the English Wall on time, except for the times when she has a meeting.

Some of you created this sentence: 'Unless Miss 🤬 has a meeting, she will not come to the English Wall on time.'

Meaning of what others wrote: Miss 🤬 will not come to the English Wall on time except for the times she has meeting. This is incorrect because Ms 🤬 cannot be at a meeting and in a chat at the same time.

Definition: 'if not'. We use it in conditional sentences instead of 'if not'. 'Unless' can be used with present, past and past perfect tenses.

Present: You will damage your health unless you stop smoking. Meaning: You will damage your health if you do not stop smoking.

Past: Unless she was working late, she would be here. Meaning: If Paul's car had not broken down I would not have taken him. We use 'unless' with present tenses when talking about the future.

This is wrong. the correct answer should be: I ate pizza yesterday.

Nisha: I learnt how to do more of grammar and editing but i think i need more practice and i will

Vriya: I learnt how to do better grammar editing. I got 6/10 for it. I really need more practice just like how Nisha needs too. I have an idea on how to do that. I have to read more books and improve on my both grammar and vocabulary. It was easy and the instructions were very clear. I understood it well. I also need to improve a bit on my free-writing exercise. It was a great experience.

Sriya: I learnt how to improve on grammar editing. I need more practice especially with editing. I think I can improve on it by reading books. Reading books helps us with our English. I am looking forward to learn more vocabulary so that I can do my writing better. I also have to elaborate more on my ideas.

How people can help themselves improve on editing:

I can help myself by reading a lot of books.

First we can analyse the blank and understand what are the type of words we need to use (e.g. adjective, adverb, noun, connectors). This way, we are more focused. It is like doing Math. We think about the question type before zooming to think about the specific answer.

How people can help themselves improve on Free-writing exercise feedback (summarised):

I felt that the free-writing exercise was good and the instructions were very clear and I understood them well. I could improve on my vocabulary as I was struggling to write my sentences and had to take help from my parents. I will be able to do that if I read tonnes of books!

Todays SLS was lengthy but easy to cope for me. I understand everything about Adjectives and adverbs. I learnt to construct my own sentences using both adverbs and adjectives. I appreciate all the hard work by all the teachers during this stressful situation (HBL because of COVID-19) I know that this is not at all easy for the teachers so I always try to give my very very best while doing it. I tried to construct good sentences. But if there is something wrong with understanding with adverbs or adjectives, please let me know so that I can rectify my mistake. It was easy.

The green column shows sentences that are constructed wrongly. The yellow column shows the good examples. Explain why the sentence or sentences does NOT show the meaning of the adjective or why it is entirely WRONG to construct the sentence that way. Add post to the different columns accordingly to explain (you can may use voice recording, picture with annotation or video of the sentence and your voice explaining in the background).

"The vase which is on the table is brittle." Does not show the meaning, it is just a mere description that you cannot understand. It says the vase is brittle but the person reading it will have no idea what does brittle mean whereas the sentence "The ceramic vase is very brittle so we should always handle it with care." gives an idea of the meaning brittle. that is: fragile or dry. "Jack gave the test paper and his mother and Jack then saw her dreadful face." does not explain dreadful because it is just a incomprehensible description. "Sally had witnessed a dreadful accident where many people were badly injured." explains why it was dreadful plus the definition of the word.
