Homeless Project - Emil

How do the homeless deal with the stigma from society?
/
How does the stigma of being homeless influence the identity of a homeless individual?

I am interested in researching the connection - or lack of - between “mainstream” society and the homeless from the perspective of the homeless. The project will most likely deal with topics such as identity, stigma, exclusion, power dynamics and “the others”. It will consist of multi-sided ethnography, as I will work through multiple field-sites incl. Døgnvarmestuer, Hus Forbi, and other sites where the homeless are spending much of their time.

During the first part of my project, my work methods will mainly be characterized by observations. From there, I’ll advance to interviews. Eventually I’ll adopt the participant observation approach, as I will “go native”, meaning I will try to become “homeless” myself.

The number of people categorized as “homeless” has steadily increased over the last couple of years, especially in Aarhus, and therefor cohesively increased the timeliness of the project.

How does it influence a non-religious event to be held in a religious setting? Why are religious spaces being used more and more for non-religious purposes?
Who attends these events?

I am going to conduct fieldwork primarily at UngK at Nørreallé in Aarhus, which is a youth church and part of the folkekirke. Here I will attend different kinds of non-religious events and I hope I will be able to join the people who are in charge of arranging these.
I intend to attend events in other churches too to gather enough data.

I am putting together an event calendar and aiming at attending as many as possible - so my fieldwork will inevitably stretch over a longer period than the two weeks in April. Here I will be observing, but definitely also participating (be it in singing, yoga, boardgames, dinner).
I would like to do interviews with the organisers and employees at the UngK and probably a mix of casual conversations and semi-structured interviews with attendees.

I have been coming to churches a lot all my life, but never with a religious purpose. I like the space, the acoustics, the history of each place, the atmosphere.
My interest at this moment, and for this specific project, is due to the fact that I have seen a development in the use of the folkekirke in the last years. There has always (at least in my time) been 'babysalmesang', choirs, preparation for confirmation, organ concerts, and 'børnegudstjeneste', but now I also notice movie nights with Jurassic Park, knitting and boardgames clubs, yoga classes, international dinners and Joey Moe concerts - i.e. new kinds of events are moving from club houses, shalas, or koncert halls and into the church.
Why is this? And does it affect the event? And the people attending?

13.2.19. Marie - Being a 'facer' (e.g., for Folkekirkens Nødhjælp, Amnesty International, etc.)

As of right now, I find it interesting to investigate the question of what drives so many young people to do what they do. Considering the fact that many of these ‘facers’ have to stand outside in all the different weather conditions, asking people to join their organisations leads me to assume that they genuinely believe in the cause of their respective organisations. Otherwise, how can they stand trying to convince so many people, most of whom probably dislike them, to join?

The fieldsite(s) will probably be somewhere in the city centre of Aarhus. However, I am also considering doing it in Copenhagen, seeing as there are far more facers (especially for Amnesty Int.) there, which may yield more significant data.

The methods will most likely be a mixture of observation, participant observation, and interviews. The observations can provide descriptions from the ‘outside’ (e.g., seeing how people react to the facers, how the facers position themselves amongst people, and so forth); the participant observations can provide some embodied experience, especially if I were to act like a facer myself (to get better insights as to what they go through on a daily basis); and interviews, of both the facers themselevs but also the people they approach, may provide insights into what they feel about their job, why they do it, etc. For the people they approach, an interview may lead to answers about why they did/did not join the organisation, what they feel about facers, etc.

The reason as to why I’m interested in the topic: Prior to landing on this topic, I was very interested in researching organisations like Greenpeace or other anti-fur/anti-hunting etc. organisations. However, I think I may be too biased to do so (my project might’ve turned into me trying to convince them to believe otherwise). Therefore i turned my interest to facers for Amnesty international/Folkekirkens Nødhjælp or the like because I know how annoying they can be to meet when walking down the street in the city, but also because I know that some of them are are so good at ‘selling’ the organisation. In addition to this, I assume a large majority of people dislike facers, which then most likely affects said facers’ day-to-day experience of being out and about.

Fieldsite and key questions:

Løve's Bog- og VinCafé (Løve’s Book and Wine Café) is a place located in Aarhus C. Despite its relatively small size, it is at the same time a bookshop, a café, a wine bar, and an event venue. How is this multi-identity of the place perceived/experienced by its guests, and how does it influence how the place is used? In a sense, what does it mean to “go to Løve's”?

Methods:

(Participant)-observation: observing the guests at Løve’s, while also being a guest there myself. Observing the staff. Going to some of the events. Can shed light on what people do there, who goes there, what I feel as appropriate to do there (as a guest), how it feels to be there.

Interviews: interviewing some of the guests and staff, maybe just striking up a conversation. Can shed light on their personal experience of the place, why they go there and in what contexts.

Interest:

I heard about Løve’s from a fellow student the other day and I am fascinated with the multiple purposes of that one place. I know that you can always bring a book to a café to read, but this place is not just a café. It seems like a melting pot of culture and I’m fascinated by the interplay between these different “types” or elements of culture in one place.

Questions
How is the concept of personal transformation understood in relation to boxing

How do the participants and the coaches of the project 'Fit for life' understand the concept of transformation?

Fieldsite:
The fieldwork will take place at FAK boxing club where they have this project called ''Fit for life''. The project is for young people at the age of 18 - 30 who for different kind of reasons is without a job or education. By being a part of ''Fit for life'' they commit themselves to box 3 times a week for at least 3 months. Throughout these months, the participants get guidance on how they can get back to work or get an education.

Methods:
I will have to do a lot of participant observation to gain their trust. Maybe do some training with them, go into the boxing ring with them, box a little. Just being around so they get used to me.
I would like to do some semi-structured interviews with the coaches.
With the participants, I would use more unstructured interviews so they feel more comfortable, and I get their life experience.

Interest
I have a interest in small communities and how being a part of these have an impact on an individual. I find the concept of personal transformation really interesting, I came across the concept while working on my thesis, where rap music often is used as a tool to help young people out of crime. I found it really interesting how the young people see this transformation but also found it problematic to put these young people into boxes; If a person is from a certain environment or has a certain background this person must be into rap. How that creates stereotypes. If you are from the middle east you must be into middle eastern music. I did not have the time to get more into the topic while writing my BA, but it has inspired me to look at this project now.

I would like to investigate the demencia life of my grandmother, Laura. I wanna see how she goes back and forth from the real life and the life she remembers (the two worlds). I will look for patterns in her actions and daily routines and see what connections they have. She is a former school teacher and a maker of cross words, but retired many years ago, but this she has forgotten (for the most of the time). It would be interesting to see how she manage to merge to two realities.

Key questions:
- How does a person with demencia experience the two worlds?
- What triggers the memory?
- What is the nursing home for Laura? (search for patterns in her apartment)

Fieldsite: The nursing home.
I will visit her every day for the two weeks. I have an idea that the one week I will call her "bedstemor", but the next "Laura" to see what that triggers.

Methods:
Partly participant observation, where I'll be the granddaughter, then make a interview (semistructured).
I will also interview the staff.
* Life stories and shared experience by Vibeke Steffen: Illness narratives

Other considerations:
- Is there social and cultural factors that play a part in a demencia life? (maybe two much)
- Ethics: Me as a granddaughter - what does that do? Pros and cons. (include this dilemma in the final paper)
- Ask her about her memory loss - how does she cope with it?
- Recordings: Recordings of her + pictures (need permission)

I will use observations and if possible participant observations in order to attain some knowledge about their life and how they act, along with everyday conversations in order to get to know them better(so that I have a chance to know what I can and can't ask them about and how they react if they get uncomfortable). In the preliminary period, I would take pictures that could be used in the interviews later on. Then I will use semi-structured interviews on the topic and make use of the pictures and maybe make some exercises with the interviewees that could help them think about their life and priorities.

Reasons/interests:
I'm interested in this cause I would like to know more about some of the challenges one might meet when moving to a new country or grow up in a different culture than one's parents culture. Especially in the context of second-or third-generation immigrants.

Field site:
Den moderne kulturelle skole (the modern cultural school) in Aarhus V, it is a school that seems to differentiate itself from other schools by their two main purposes, the first is to educate the students in (their perception of) Islamic values and second to prepare them for the Danish society by educating them to become 'good' medborgere (fellow citizens) and learn them about democratic practices.

Key question(s):
How do they deal with bilingual students and try to prepare them for the Danish society by learning them about a part of their (presumably) cultural or religious background? What are the underlying assumptions they build this upon according to themselves?

Methods:
Observations of class teaching, breaks, and staff room.
Focus interview with the children on topics (maybe using visuals or other things that could help the communication).
Informal interviews during the day with e.g. parents, teachers, staff, and children.
Semi-structured interview with some of the teachers, principal or others.
Participant observation maybe it could be possible to presentations in the classes or otherwise participate in the teaching, e.g. helping the students doing the classes.

Reason/interests:
I find it interesting as an approach to deal with integration that seems different from other schools I know about.
