Quantitative Data

Quantitative data is any information that can be reduced to a set of numbers. Any information from which you can create averages, differences, or totals is quantitative data. Examples of quantitative data would include assessment scores, structured interviews, questionnaires and surveys.

Qualitative Data

Qualitative data is any type of data that can be observed and described non-numerically (generally by words or letters). Examples of qualitative data would include observations, journal entries, personal interviews, anecdotal note-taking. Qualitative data could expand to include check-in records, notes from students, personal surveys about well-being, and observations from online meetings.

Formative Data

Data that is gathered from students that can help you understand what your students know mid-lesson or mid-unit. This form of data is often used to modify teaching strategies or materials in the immediate future.

Summative Data

Data that is more "high-stakes" and often takes the form of end-of-lesson or end-of unit tests and projects. This form of data can be used as a long-term form of formative data, as it helps inform teaching in the more distant future.

Student Files

Useful information about your student/s may be found in student files. Taking the time to review student files and counseling records will provide the teacher with some reference points from which to compare the data from within the class.

Feedback from Teachers

Additional teachers may work with the students you are monitoring. Take the time to meet with and interview those teachers. Ask about strengths and weaknesses, interest areas, etc.
