PROJECT1: Autobiography - My Mini Album

My childhood was like a juicy orange, happily spilling its juice under the sun, each slice of flesh overflowing with sweetness and delight. However, oranges are not only about the pulp, but also about the bitter orange peel.

My parents treat me well and I can say that I think they are the best parents in the whole world, but of course that doesn't mean I don't envy other people's families. I'm self-conscious that I've had a pretty good time in all these short 18 years of my life. This autobiographical account simply writes about my childhood and youth; they are pure and complex, finely woven into the present me.

It's really hard for me to imagine that I'm going to finish the class in less than May. eap2 has been the most challenging course with the most assignments I've had this semester. I thought I would hate the language class or it would be my least favorite class, but the gentle Professor Zehara and the lively students really warmed my heart. Next on display are my project accomplishments in EAP2 over the course of the semester, as well as some snippets of my life.

This is the hardest project in my opinion, bar none. I couldn't freely narrate and discuss what I wanted to say, I had to interpret and quote closely to the material that existed. This was a very difficult place for me to understand and make choices. I could relate my own ideas to Yo-Yo Ma and Shirley, but there was no way for me to accurately infuse and incorporate their ideas into my own writing.

In the end, though, I think my finished product was okay, not as disastrous as I had anticipated.

-The things we feel most proud of, that is, most worthy of, are test scores and efficiency, which are our values. But what we look forward to the most, what we want to be the most, that is, our outlook on life and morality, is empathy, creativity and fairness, which have little relevance to exams and competitions.Chinese empathy seems very contradictory, both weak and strong. What leads to this characterization? Because our culture dictates this.

-China's dominant linguistic culture prefers and specializes in indirection. Expressions affect emotions. If our words are veiled, how can we pour out our emotions in a straightforward manner?

-In ancient times, theater was a spiritual artifact that many people enjoyed and were passionate about. The content of Chinese drama is varied, but it is roughly divided into three categories: life, war and emotions. As I learned more about it, I realized that the core of drama is much deeper than I thought. For example, the famous play "The West Wing" tells the story of a man and a woman who try their best to break away from the world to pursue their own happiness. It belongs to the emotional category, but the author uses the characters' mouths to express his resistance to the feudal dregs.

February 10th is the most important traditional festival in the Chinese Lunar Calendar - the Spring Festival. During the Spring Festival, people should get together with their families to eat "reunion dinner" and wear clothes and jewelry with red elements. Since February 10th was already two weeks into the school year, I had dinner with my good friends from China that I met at Rutgers.

It was my first Halloween in the West and it was really atmospheric, with so many people in the school dressed as different ghosts and goblins. I wore a Chinese dress and played the Chinese "Bride Ghost", which is quite famous in the Chinese legend. Ghost brides often find evil in their husbands and in-laws on their wedding day and then choose to hang themselves because the wedding day is traditionally a woman's most blessed day, so death brings the most resentment.
