My responsibilites as a teacher are vast. It is not just something I have to act in school, but something I need to live my every day life. As teachers, our lives are on display and we need to act accordingly. It is important to be willing to listen to my students and their community to best help them. I must lead by example in order to show my students how to act, but I need to listen to how they act at home in order to make sure they feel comfortable in school. Finding the best way to help my students is my responsibily as a teacher.

I believe that teaching is a practice. Teaching, like many jobs, is always evolving. Every generation has a new outlook on how to do it. Because of this, we as educators have to continuously practice new techniques. Each new technique can be used throughout their experience of teaching. If we do not continue as educators, we will fall behind. This is similar to if an athlete stops practicing, they will fall behind.

When we are born, we are automatically curious. From the moment we can see, we search everything around us. We get wide eyed at everything we see. From the time we can crawl, we search for new places in our environment. We "get in trouble" by touching everything we see. We taste what looks good. We twist and turn our heads in every way possible to see a new perspective. It is not until we are older, and we have a false idea that we know everything, that this thirst for learning ends. It is natural for us to want to learn until we are satisfied. As teachers, it is our job to keep kids always wondering. To not make learning boring. In this way, they will always want to learn.

This is true in so many ways. School will shape the minds of those attending and the next generation whether the purpose of it is to do so or not. This can be for better or for worse. Our goal as teachers is to shape the minds of the students for the better. This is easier said than done however. Many practices and laws that are brought to school to help shape the minds of the students positively can have negatives effects. One of these effects is the school to prison pipeline. Some genius decided that by creating stricter policies, kids would behave and conform. Although i'm sure it worked for a small amount of people, there is a good amount that ultimately end up in jail and prison. One of the ways schools are attempting to change this negative outcome is restorative justice "Restorative Justice holds the promise that standards of punishment and exclusion can be shifted to a new paradigm that embraces healing and inclusion." (spotlight practice) This is a positive way schools are shaping the minds of the students that go there. This is focused on collaboration and teamwork to refocus negative experiences into growing.

Schools have been around since ancient times. Since schools have been prominant in society, they have been a greater factor in the next generation. They are so important because they shape the minds of those attending through not only education, but teaching of social skills, class management, and more. This can be a good or a bad thing though depending on the situation. "The structure and practices of schools (e.g., rigid tracking, unevenly distributed resources, standardized testing) can privilege select groups of students while marginalizing or segregating others. Katz (1996, 1999)" (Weinstein, Tomlinson-Clark, Curran 2004) This is to say that schools often punish those who do not fit the social norms set by the dominant narritive while celebrating those who conform. Though this is often times not a purposeful act, it is still a huge issue that needs to stop. Because it is a school's job to create the next generation, we as teachers need to be open minded to the different cultures we have in America and teach to their customs to our best ability.

I believe students learn best when they are able to relate to what they are learning. We have learned through studies, teaching, and personal experience this basic fact of teaching that we need to make it relatable. Students need to feel connected to the lesson or they will not put in effort. They will not retain the information. They will become lost like so many students before them. In order to facilitate this idea in our future classrooms, we, as teachers, need to give them opportunities to show us their interests and needs. "the teacher cannot fully meet the needs of students unless the students have an opportunity to show the teacher what they need" (Emdin, pg. 87) By making our classroom environment one where the students feel like their opinions, likes, and dislikes are important, they will be able to relate to the material and be engaged with their learning.
