1. What is the role of motivation in student learning? How is it related to interest? What causes lack of engagement in school tasks?

The role of motivation in student learning is a very important aspect to get students interested in their own learning. For example, the text a student uses, needs to be interesting and the right level, and the reading has to be purposeful. (Fisher et al. 2014, pg. 4) In other words, what students are exposed to through their learning, needs to be connected to real reasons. In the long run, this will help with motivating students. When a student is exposed to a text that is too complex for them, this can cause lack of engagement in school tasks. A tutor must make sure that the features of the text like surface, content, and formatting are at a level that the student can work with. (Fisher et al. 2014, pg. 6).

2. When choosing reading materials, what criteria influence your decision? How does purpose impact your decision-making?

When choosing reading materials, a tutor must keep in mind surface features, content, and formatting of a text. This might mean, making sure a student can decode, checking for sentence and text length, and interesting text. (Fisher et al. 2014, pg. 7-8). When choosing the right text, a tutor must also be reflective about what is the intended purpose of the lessons. This will help choose text that will help student growth in the reading area that is necessary.

3. Review the student profiles of Courtney and Alana. What would a lesson for the next session with each of these students include?

Courtney struggled with recognizing short i from short a when her tutor, Mark, gave her a spell check. Moving forward, I think an optional lesson plan would be to review the short i sound and read a book at her instructional level that includes short i words. This way, some of those words can be substituted in the sort. Moreover, Courtney can also practice an activity where she uses visuals with short i and identify what they all have in common. These types of activities in a lesson plan can help support proficiency in short i recognition.

Alana struggled with complex text and strategies to help comprehend the text. In the next lesson plan, I think Alana would benefit from a mini teacher modeled lesson and think aloud, including a note taking graphic organizer. Here, the teacher could model going back in the text and taking notes of things that stood out and things that she is confused about. Then, going back to the text to find context clues to help support her comprehension. This could help support her understanding of the complex text by breaking up the text into note taking by section.

4. Considering the 5 Pursuits as Dr. Muhammad describes them, which are most and least evident in your curriculum and pedagogy? Explain how and why.

Considering the 5 Pursuits of Dr. Muhammad, I think the ones most evident in my curriculum and pedagogy are identity, skill, and intellectualism. Through my teaching practices, I think I do well with making connections within content areas of exposing my students to society as a whole. For example, I often try to give examples of how others communities differ from our own, especially in our own city. Moreover, students learn new ideas every day in our classroom along with putting their skills into practice. Some of the pursuits I would think are not so common in our curriculum and pedagogy are criticality and joy. I don't think our curriculum exposes students to real world circumstances and topics. As a second grade teacher, I oftentimes catch myself figuring out a way to word things for the sensitivity of students (and parents). Also, I would like to find more ways to find joy throughout the day to day routine and remind myself and my students to find joy in what we are learning and within ourselves.

5. What's one thing from the podcast and/or article that resonated with you OR challenged you? Why?

While listening to the podcast, one thing that resonated to me was when Dr. Muhammad spoke upon the importance of it being everyone's responsibility to pursuit a better humanity through literacy in our children/students. It is important that students are introduced to literacy at home and bringing that into their school setting. Moreover, it is on the educator to make sure to find those at home connections to help support student identity. It is up to the educator to take the "genius" that students have within themselves to use that to support culturally responsive teaching in their classrooms.
