The patriots knew the soldiers weren't British citizens, but rather Hessian Mercenaries, which are soldiers that are paid for professional help on the battlefield, fighting against them. Washington assumed these paid soldiers were enjoying their Christmas and not keeping watch over the river, so he brought his men over to basically ambush them, which resulted in the Patriots' victory.

The Winter at Valley Forge was a winter from 1777-1778 when General George Washington and approximately 11,000 Continental Army soldiers stayed at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, while withdrawing from the battle, which was common in wintertime. Because the Continental troops had scarce supplies when they arrived and Congress did not provide the resources that Washington requested, the troops built their own huts, and suffered a lack of food and warm clothing. Disease was terrible, and some even died from exposure to cold. Around 2000 men died at Valley Forge. While the hardships were strenuous, the crew kept disciplined and prepared for battle, training in drills under generals such as the German officer General Friedrich von Steuben.
