1. My mother is a registered nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital and has been a nurse for over 15 years. She is constantly telling me how much she wants me to become a nurse and howbeing nurse would be good for me. But I don’t really have an interest in becoming a nurse. I am more interested in engineering and science. Fortunately for me, my mother is very accepting of my ideas and doesn’t push it on me to become a nurse. In my opinion, I believe that it is normal for parents to want what’s best for their child. But sometimes what is best for them is not what will make them happy in the long run. So, I think its good to have your child be aware of wat you want for them but not to pressure them into having it or pursuing your want. Instead letting them find their own interests.

2. My role model in my life is my father because he comes from a very hard childhood and overcame it to have a successful life. When he was younger, he grew up poor in Mexico and was abused by his father. When he was just 5 years old him, his parents, and his 7 siblings had to immigrate to America and had to learn English on his own. He was a very talented soccer player and would’ve made it very far. But, he had a child at a young age and had to give up soccer to take care of his daughter (my sister). Now, he is a company owner of a construction business and can provide not only for me, my sisters, and my mother, but also for his parents and his siblings as well.

In Dr. Werhner von Braun’s quote, he talks about how we cannot really control what is inside other people’s heads. We cannot influence a child’s personality or decisions instead all we can really do is leave them with what’s in their head. The one thing we can change is their education. We can add more and more education and knowledge into their head and that’s what will make successful in the future. Possessions, on the other hand, can be taken away or given at any time. When a child learns something, that fact cannot be taken away. In Miss Freida Joy Riley’s quote, she talks about how people can provide the materials and thing you need to learn but its up to us to do something with those things. She uses a book as the material and tells that she is providing us with the book and its up to us to read it and gain knowledge or to put it down and learn nothing. We have that decision.

Literary Responses 2: Sonny’s View on the World

Sonny’s thoughts and feelings about family

Throughout the novel the reader gets an insight on Sonny’s family and how they interact with one another. When the whole family moved to Coalwood, Sonny was happy that he did not have to share a room with Jim. This shows that Sonny is not very fond of Jim and Jim was not fond of Sonny because or their differences. It also seems as if Sonny’s father does not like him either. Sonny believes this because “[he] knew [his] Dad thought about Jim all the time, [he] was always telling people what a great football player [his] brother is” (Hickam 43). On the other hand, Sonny’s mother is constantly supporting him. She is the one who inspires him to pursuit his rocket making. She pushes him to make the rocket so that he could get out of Coalwood and get into a college. After his failed launch of the Auk IV, Sonny’s father was furious and tells him that he is done with rockets. Sonny is worried that he messed up too bad this time but his mother talks to him and tells him “if you give up that easy, I guess you are [done]” (Hickam 96). This shows that his mother is trying to tell Sonny if you give up so easily, then you will not be able to finish that rocket. This shows how she is thinking about his future and what is best for him.
