Using your text books

Text books are to be used as a guide for your study to provide additional information that expands on the information provided in the modules. You should not rely too heavily on your text book as a reference source in your assignments and do not use it in place of the original theorists. You are expected to research and find the original theorists (many of whom have been provided to you as downloads in the modules) and use these as the central sources. If you use a textbook then it should just be used as a supporting source or to reference general discussion about the theory.

This is important as it highlights the need for you to undertake academic research when preparing for your assignments. The ability to research is an important academic skill to develop. This subject introduces you to the conventions of academic writing in addition to introducing you to criminological theory. The ALLaN Team are available to assist with the academic writing conventions if you encounter difficulties.

Details of specific readings will be provided in each module. You should also be prepared to search for materials such as refereed journals – there are very many articles in criminology and social policy journals – through Primo Search and CSU library, particularly when you undertake the assignments.
Additionally, there are many excellent policy reports to supplement the academic literature and you will find these essential.
