In the past, being abroad, we have had some experiences with accent as a difficulty to communicate in English with people from other nationalities. To support this, when Natalia traveled for vacation to The Bahamas, she tried to communicate with a new friend, then she realized that it was complex to understand his English accent, because his accent was characterized by speaking “Bahamian Creole or Bahamian English.” Likewise, Camila experienced something similar when she met two Chinese girls and she perceived that it was complicated to communicate with Asian English speakers. Consequently, this topic is relevant to study from an intercultural communication perspective since in multiple social situations you might encounter that accent is part of English communication skills as it reflects the background and communication style of each individual. Therefore, an accent can be recognized as one of the barriers of intercultural communication when you travel abroad and interact with people from all over the world.
