My first day of doing the Caribbean civilization course at the University of the West Indies was very interesting. I went to the class with a premeditated idea of what/ how the course should be. However, the only thing overlapping with my idea was the portfolio assignment. I was expecting to do a book report and the other assignment like the ones given in semester one but instead I had to do a multiple-choice quiz and write about artefacts. I was very disappointed by this, as one of the reasons I was excited to do this course is because there were no testes or quizzes. At this point I wanted to drop the course however I didn’t.

After the class was given an introduction to the course, we were shown a short video. The video gave the class something to think about, as it showed how we quickly judge people because of the stereotypes we have. Majority of the class thought that the man in the video was going to rob the house because he was black and there was a white woman in the house, when in fact it was his house and the woman that was in his house was his maid.

And that was my first day doing this course, not really looking forward to the rest of this course.

Civilisation is aspect of collective existence and culture progressively develops in a society. According to www.dictionary.cambridge.org a society is “a large group of people who live together in an organized way, making decisions about how to do things and sharing the work that needs to be done”. There are different types of societies a civilised society, an uncivilised society, a developing society and advanced society.

Firstly, a uncivilised society according to www.dictionary.cambridge.org is “not suitable for a well-developed, peaceful society where people are treated fairly”. In an uncivilized society, the people are more in touch with nature and make all of their own vital necessities (food, clothes, shelter, tools, art). Uncivilized minds are filled with a vast knowledge and practical wisdom about nature and how to live sustainably. However, to the modern world it is highly criticized by most people and is seen as unsophisticated.

Secondly, a civilized society according to www.dictionary.cambridge.org “has a well-developed system of government, culture, and way of life and that treats the people who live there fairly.” This type of society is present in today’s world, in most developed and developing countries. Therefore, I say yes because one of the definitions used to define the Caribbean is, any land touched by the Caribbean Sea. Also, it has similar historical processes such as it “discovery” by Christopher Columbus and the movements of the indigenous people.

There are males who identify themselves as females, females who identify themselves as males. Me, identifying myself as a female place me in a social group and creates a social sigma against me. This can be both positive and negative. As a female, you can become objectified, can be seen as inferior to male and is expected to take one certain roles in the house. However, views are changing, the glass ceiling is being broken as women are dominating in fields such as science, mathematics, engineering and politics, fields which were previously dominated by men.

Promoters often spend a lot of money to get foreign artist to perform because their music is popular in the Caribbean. The American style of music have also influenced Caribbean music example electronic dance music (EDM). This style of music is being used to remake local songs as well as created new songs. For example, a song released by Fay Ann Lyons called ‘catch me’ which was heavily influenced by EDM.

Education helps to have a better life
Is education the gateway to happiness?
In my option not essentially. Education can make some people happy to a certain extent. Getting an education makes you feel accomplished and proud because, you have a good education you can get good job which pays well and you are expected to be happy. However, some of the most educated people are unhappy. Some people become so determined to get a good level education that they become depressed while trying the achieve it, as they a miss out on many life experiences. Education is used to control people, making them believe that you must have a certain level of education to be happy. It all depends on what a person values in life.
Should the main purpose of education be to get a job?
No, because you wouldn't be happy and become stressed yourself. You would not ab able to enjoy your life.
Is there a role for education in Caribbean nation building?
Yes, the educated people can help to build the Caribbean and improve it. There would be more people knowledgeable which can make a better society.

Diwali in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Festival of Lights symbolizes the lifting of spiritual darkness. In 1966, Divali Day was proclaimed an annual public holiday in Trinidad and Hindus all over the country celebrate the occasion with the lighting of diyas. In the Hindu community, there are various beliefs as to the genesis of the festival. The Northern Hindus believe Deepawali is celebrated to commemorate the return of the Lord Rama to Ayodhya and the defeat of Rawana by Lord Rama, the symbol of goodness as depicted in the Hindu Classic "Ramayana". While Hindus in the South celebrate the occasion in remembrance of the victory of Lord Krishna over evil Naraksura.

Whatever the origin, the symbolism and significance of light is central to the observances of Divali. Light dispels the darkness of this mortal world and allows us to find our true path. The enlightened soul can then walk this darkened world shedding light, illuminating the darkness of his fellow men. Divali also fosters a feeling of comradeship and community as is evidenced by the sharing and giving.

This festival tends to bring people of different ethnic groups and religious persuasion together to partake in food and celebration. On this day, you can see people of different racial background lighting diyas and wearing the traditional Indian wear.

Dear readers,

The last day of doing this course, I couldn’t be anymore happier that this course is over. I am disappointed in myself because I still didn’t like the course. As a science student, this was a course I did just to pass and because I had to do it. I was hoping by the end of this course my option would change but it didn’t. I have a lot of respect to the students and teachers who are in humanities and education faculty however this course was not for me. Good luck to the future student that have to do this course and may the odds be ever in your favour.

Thirdly, a developing society is a nation or a sovereign society with a less developed industrial base and economy. It also has a mixture of a civilized society and mostly uncivilized society. It is seen as inferior and is not really desirable by today’s world.

Fourthly, an advanced society is one which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached. It is an independent society that has a highly-developed economy and advanced technological infrastructure. This society is similar to civilized society and is seen a superior to others and is highly favorable in today’s world. Everyone has equal opportunities and are fairly treated within this society.

In conclusion because for the way certain societies are put forward by the western world they end up getting a negative view. Truly I believe that there is no right or wrong society and that each society has its own strength. I believe that the ideal society must have an equal mixture of both civilized and uncivilized aspects.
