I chose to focus on it because I have recently shifted from online to in-person for my EL 5 class, and because of this I have started with a completely new group of students. They are still learning classroom procedures, this one included. In my upcoming reflections, I will write about how students are continuing to develop in this area. A couple weeks ago, when I suggested this method to them, some of them appeared surprised (no doubt not used to being able to pass the baton to another student on their own terms, and more used to a teacher-directed choosing system), but within minutes, all students were on board and all were ready to be called on. I have found that this strategy increases attention (a student pays attention more in case they get chosen to speak) and it increases enjoyment (students always love an element of choice in the classroom!).
