Islamic rulers charged taxes on non-muslims making it expensive to practice religious freedom. This caused much of the lower class to switch to Islam and only the highest class could afford practicing their own religion. As Islam became more prominent in S/SE Asia it influenced the prior culture and traditions.

Although Islam wanted to proselytize, they'd soon realized that forcing their religion onto the Indian people wouldn't subserve the religion. Having conquered Delhi and a lot of northern South Asia and founding the Delhi Sultanate, the Muslims imposed a tax on non-Muslims called the jizga. However, they hesitated to expand south on account of their fear of the Mongols. Islam appealed to many Hindus because it challenged the caste system and, unsuccessfully, lower caste Hindus believed that conversion would abet their social status. Buddhism had started disintegrating in India, on account of corruption and intrusion from the Muslims. The Bhakti movement, established in the 12th century, helped make Hinduism popular again.

- The expansion of trade among West Asia, India and Southeast Asia helped the spread of the religion as Muslim traders brought Islam to the region. Gujarati Muslims played a pivotal role in establishing Islam in Southeast Asia. The second theory is the role of missionaries or Sufis.

-Traders from northern India shared Islam throughout Indonesia.

-Scholars from the Mideast spread Islam during their travels.

-Missionaries from China taught about Islam on their journeys.

- Islam had started spreading in India. Some of these Muslims became traders and travelled to the islands of South East Asia, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Phillipines for business. There, they spread their religion, in addition to trade. Several Muslim kingdoms were founded by a Sultan.Currently, Malaysia is a Muslim majority nation and about 40 % of its people are Muslims.

-After the advent of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century, Islam started its expansion towards eastern regions through trade encouraged by the development of the maritime Silk Roads. Muslims were known to have a commercial talent notably encouraged by Islam, as well as excellent sailing skills. Thus, they could monopolize the East-West trade of the maritime Silk Roads, connecting various major ports of eastern Asian regions together. Indeed, their commercial ships had to halt at various ports to be supplied with water and food, be repaired, or to wait for changes in wind direction.

Islam provided equality to all people, not just men, like many other religions and cultures at the time. This lead to a shift in belief by many peoples, especially women because it gave them more rights. This led to a lack of acceptance by leaders across Southeast Asia.
