Example, similar organisms such as ancient crabs and fish found fossilized from prehistoric times gives an idea to sea life's ancestry. These fossils can be examined for similar features as present day creatures, as well as examining when organisms developed different parts of the body, which also shows when different species split on the tree of life.

Other species have useless features as well. many whale species have what seems to be leg bones that were once belived to be used by their land ancestors, that were more deer than swimmer. This could also help explain why whales still breath air and don't have gills. If everything came from the ocean, whale ancestors developed lungs and lost gills, then went back into the ocean, they don't have gills anymore so must adapt through evolution which is what they did.

Each continent has its own unique species, but that doesn't mean theyre not related. Polar bears found in the north pole are closely related to other bear species such as the california black bear. Migrating to a different region, it is believed the bear species adapted white fur as an example and many more features to give us today's polar bear.

Seeing as chickens and humans look very similar in early embryo development it can be determined humans and chickens shared a common ancestry some time ago. Since chickens and humans look very different from one another in later development and adulthood, it can be inferred humans and chickens split on the tree of life a long time ago.

Many living things have the protein Cytochrome C. Each organism with this has a different strain from others.
