Teachers will conduct a pre-assessment that I give them at this time in order to assess the overall effectiveness of the small group sessions.

This small group will have a group between 4-6 students. Students will be homogeneous in nature because of their similar needs/problems.
Stage 1: I plan to build relationships with my students by making our lessons fun and interactive. I also hope to ask students more personal questions to find out what they are interested in so I can build connections with them.

Stage 2: In order to work together as a group, I will remind students of our rules/expectations before each session or as needed. Each student will have a chance to practice a new skill we discussed before they leave the session.

Stage 3: At our closing session, I will conduct final interviews and a post assessment to track growth and feelings towards the small group counseling session. We will also discuss how to maintain contact afterwards... even after the group ends.

I believe I would take a Participative Leadership (Democratic)leadership style during my small group (Cherry, 2021).
This approach involves the leader offering guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members (Cherry, 2021).
I think this approach would work best because it involves working as a team rather than me (the leader) creating all of the decisions and not allowing for any student input in their learning process.

Title 19 Texas Administrative Code Chapter 239(f)(2) states that a school counselor must 2) use knowledge of group dynamics and productive group interaction; as well as (8) work effectively as a team member to promote positive change for individuals, groups, and the school community. I believe both of these ethical requirements for school counselors will be beneficial in my small group instruction. It is important for students to feel understood, respected, and safe in order for them to feel willing to learn.
(TEA, 2021)

As stated in the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics, A.9.b. Protecting Clients: in a group setting, counselors take reasonable precautions to protect clients from physical, emotional, or psychological trauma.
This is very important to remember when working with a group of students and keeping each individually safe. Through our implementation of new vocabulary to use in communication with peers as well as the practice of kind words and self advocating, it is my goal to make sure no students feels uncomfortable or unsafe in that situation. If one student is being negative or inappropriate towards another then it needs to be quickly addressed in order to avoid emotional or psychological consequences.
