- Focused on developing English proficiency, this is the only language spoken in ESL classrooms.

- Small class sizes allow for more interaction between EL's and targeting of instruction.

- EL's are in socially isolated classroom without much interaction with other students

- ESL teachers must obtain a Bachelor's degree or higher, teaching certificate/license, and TESOL/TEFL/TESL certificate.

- Typically, it takes EL students 3-5 years to obtain English oral proficiency, and 4-7 years to develop academic proficiency. Of course, this is just an estimate; a student may take longer to obtain this knowledge, or may be quick to learn.

Using consistent messaging and intentional planning is key in an ESL classroom. Doing so allows all students to feel seen, comfortable, and appreciated. For example, a teacher can do this by ensuring their classroom library is reflective of various cultures and diverse backgrounds.

This may sound self explanatory, however, it makes all the difference when teaching EL's. Adding a few more seconds after you pose a question to the class allows time for students to translate, process their thinking, translate it back to English and develop the courage to answer.

Incorporating writing, drawing, speaking and listening into one lesson gives students four opportunities to deepen their understanding of the content. Additional engagements also give EL's a little "breather" which allows them to work through the language barrier.

Ways to Engage Parents and Families

1. Make it Reciprocal: Engagement is a partnership between parents and the school/teacher. The teacher's role should be to explicitly outline what the parents role should be and how they can help their child succeed.

2. Keep It Simple: Aim for clarity when engaging in conversations with parents and families. Using visuals, graphic organizers, and translated or icon based information sheets to help eliminate confusion with certain terminology.

3. Increase Capacity: Provide a range of low-risk opportunities for parent input, feedback, and cultural sharing. This could look like hosting parent-school partnership events, organize parent-created learning lessons, or consistently utilize parent feedback to inform decision making.
