MERIDA

Merida embodies the idea of self reliance by controlling her own future as she wins her archery competition, she refuses the wealth and power of her family and through feminism proves her ability to succeed independently.Merida is a brave, bold, suborn, rebellious, honorable and courageous. Like in the excerpt Merida proves she is like no other girl and takes on the adventure of doing something for herself. Mr.Emerson also embodies this by stating "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string." to emphasize the importance of believing in yourself and depending on yourself like Merida.

The song "let it go" sang by Elsa in Disneys frozen goes hand in hand with Emersons essay. Elsa sings "It's time to see what I can do To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free" After running away from the place who has made her confined and scared of what she is, and finally she is confident in herself so much so that she uses her own powers to build a beautiful castle in which she lives in. The castle is isolated yet she is happy because she is free and only relies on herself. by saying "Im free" she shows how much happier she is isolated from society and Emerson also emphasizes this by stating "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members." Meaning that they both trust themselves more than society.

Emerson has stated that “To be great is to be misunderstood.” Lots of people have have proven him to be correct such as Socrates,Joan of Arc, Da Vinci, Galileo, Beethoven, Abraham Lincoln,Van Gogh and many other people. A lot of these people were men because women were not respected enough to become apart of history, however one woman was truly misunderstood, Pocahontas. In the early seventeenth century, During the Anglo-Powhatan Wars Pocahontas wanted to escape her sheltered life as a woman and prove that she wasn't defenseless, while fighting for her land she meet a man whom she quickly grew fond of . When people found out they assumed that she was turning on her people. However she was just a clueless young girl who wanted to explore life outside of her fathers boundary's. Although she tragically died she left a legacy of feminism and has left a role model for woman to stand up for what they believe in whether they understand or not.

McCandless’ father Walt was described as being a perfectionist throughout his childhood. This created a separation between him and his family, making him desire freedom from them. As he got older and his opportunities grew he was able to finally do as he pleased, so without any experience he "planned" his trip. Although some people misunderstood him and considered him to be careless, ignorant and have a lack of common sense, he did not have any experience and wanted to live life to the fullest and finally be free. As Emerson stated "A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best;" even though he did not survive his journey he was happy, which is all he had ever wanted.
