Police brutality is defined as the use of unwarranted or excessive and often illegal use of force against civilians by police officers. Forms of police brutality have ranged from beatings to mayhem, torture, and murder. Some broader definitions of police brutality also encompass harassment--including false arrest, intimidation, and verbal abuse, among other forms of mistreatment. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, police brutality was used to. Police Brutality. ProQuest, Ann Arbor, 2021.

It was also a common occurrence during the civil rights era when activists would be sprayed with water hoses and attacked by police dogs. Marginalized and minority communities (Black Americans, Native Americans, religious minorities, the mentally ill, the disabled, LGBT people, and the poor) have often been more likely to suffer police brutality. In recent years, widespread civilian use of cell phone video cameras and requirements that police use body and dashboard-mounted cameras have increased the amount of documented evidence of the brutal realities of policing for both civilians and officers. There is much debate about what can be done to reduce police brutality. Some people believe that better training, increased accountability, and technology like body cameras will limit violence and brutality. However, others argue that training, accountability, and body cameras aren't enough to prevent violence by police. Police Brutality. ProQuest, Ann Arbor, 2021.

By 1989, Graham v. Conner had reached the Supreme Court - where the court's ruling would establish legal standards for police brutality lawsuits that reverberate today. Every police use of force since reflects law enforcement's absorption of constitutional lessons the justices drew from the Charlotte police's violent treatment of an innocent, desperately ill man. Training for police officers across the country - probably including Derek Chauvinist of Minneapolis - teaches they can't be sued if they behave in accordance with the holding of Graham v. Conner." (Washington Post) This article discusses the Graham v. Conner court case and how the Supreme Court's ruling on it has influenced police brutality.
