The biblical application was being seen in the story of the ‘Good Samaritan’ in the Gospel of Luke 10:25-37. Briefly the phrase ‘the Good Samaritan’ means to help a stranger and this is akin to many aspects of how Mary Mackillop operated. This parable demonstrated the ethics of Jesus, his actions and this attitude and behaviour can be seen throughout the life of Mary Mackillop.

World behind: The parable was set on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho”. The parable was set in the time of when Jesus was alive.

The characters in this narrative are the priest, the lawyer, The Levite, the man and the Samaritan.

World in front of the text: The good Samaritan can be used in the 21st century the lesson in it which is if somebody is in harm don’t be afraid to come in contact with the bully as long as you’re not harming yourself and other onlookers. Another way of stating this is to be the bigger person.

Mary Mackillop displayed this by she was the bigger person to help the less fortunate than her and giving them an education and creating shelters for them.

World of the text: The message behind the good Samaritan is unselfishly help others even if they are strangers. This is an indication of being loyal and this is exactly what the good Samaritan displayed by stopping and helping the guy who was getting robbed.
