I don't think we're ever truly free because although laws are good and they aim to protect us, we are still limited in our freedoms in many situations. The term is effectively a device for winning favor with people over false promises or hidden truths.
We agree with his claim because the idea of what freedom really is does not hold true for many countries where people are supposedly "free".
