True freedom is impossible, as the rules of any society automatically restrict it.

To free yourself you must know you are not free, and only then can you truly want and work towards being free, otherwise nothing will happen.

My personal definition of freedom is being able to do what one wants without consequences. I do not think we are ever truly free. If for example someone wanted to lie or cheat there would be consequences. Even if it is not a large consequence given by an authority figure, there are societal consequences for all of our actions. I think that oftentimes people want to do things that as a side effect hurt others in the process and so I do not think it is good to let people do whatever they want. People need to be controlled but just not too controlled and this fine line can create many issues.

Some factors that influence freedom are different responsibilities , the law, the media, and other people, like parents or people of power. What might be okay for someone to do within their own reason could not be okay with someone else which restricts what people can do.

The authors claim is: "Finally, we have this twist. Freedom doesn't exist at all. If it did, it would only pertain to the individual, and since The Individual is a mythical construct with no meaning, freedom is also a myth." Overall the author is highlighting the fact that individualism and freedom do not exist. They are able to support this claim with examples of criminals twisting the meaning of individualism and freedom in order to garner support for their cause. Our pod group think this claim is interesting yet also shocking. While we do believe freedom and individualism can be limited, we do not totally agree that they are nonexistent.

"All we have to do now, is take these lies and make them true somehow. All we have to see, is that I don't belong to you, and you don't belong to me." This song is basically saying that Freedom isn't real and it doesn't belong to the individual. This relates to Brave New World because in the book they are conditioned to believe lies similarly to the first line of this song.

"Political leaders who preach and teach about the need for "mass freedom movements" are never part of those groups. That tells you how deep the public trance can go. Relatively few people say, "Look, the president isn't with the group. He's separate. So how can he tell us what to think, what to do?" This claim states the truth about reality. It stresses on the point that no one can tell us what freedom is until they express it themselves.

The author's claim is "Finally, we have this twist. Freedom doesn't exist at all. If it did, it would only pertain to the individual, and since The Individual is a mythical construct with no meaning, freedom is also a myth." The claim that the author is making is very shocking and gets the audiences attention all in itself. He uses many forms of support to support his claim. He uses examples of presidents in order to support his claim. He uses an example of criminals and how they twist the meaning of freedom so that people will support them. That is not real freedom and also displays how freedom may not actually even exist if it is only "used" for fake support or votes. Me and Aspen are very interested in the claim that the author is making. This is similar to a conspiracy theory and honestly we have never really thought about it before but now that we have it is very understandable why people think this way.

"Say it and they stand up and salute. It doesn't matter how far the word is being twisted. As long as the people like it and respond to it, you could be referring to a mass slaughter." The author claims that the word freedom and its definition have the wrong impact on people, as it causes them to just blindly follow whoever preaches freedom. He is saying that the concept of freedom is twisted in the majority of people's minds, and they do not take the time to think more into it, or attempt to see a new viewpoint. The term is effectively a device for winning favor with people over false promises or hidden truths.
We agree with his claim because the idea of what freedom really is does not hold true for many countries where people are supposedly "free".

The central message of the song is that one can not be free when they are being made to change who they are to fit in line with what others want from them. The last few lines "May not be what you want from me
Just the way it's got to be
Lose the face now
I've got to live, I've got to live, I've got to live" are evident of this because he is saying that he cannot be free if he must conform to what someone else wants.

George Michaels is claiming that people often believe they have to be a certain way for example you have to be in a relationship with a specific person, but freedom that we all have allows us to not be defined by our outward appearance and instead we can live the way we want to live and break the stereotypes. In the song it says "to win the race a prettier face, brand new clothes and a big fat place" This really relates to modern society because of how we as individuals are defined. Especially as a women we are define by our looks and our makeup and if we are wearing nice and expensive clothes. People of all walks of life are defined by their income. If someone does not have a lot of money and they are living in a rich society they are viewed as different which is completely unfair and untrue but this is what the song is also portraying. Later in the song the artist sings, "there's something deep inside of me there's someone else i've got to be" this relates to Bernard in the novel. Bernard feels isolated forms society because he does not look like the other alphas and is not respected and also has different morals than the others. He tells his friend Helmholtz that he wants to be different and he does not just want to have sex with every woman.

Many people have different definitions of freedom. This relates to Brave New World, because the citizens are conditioned to believe they have freedom, but in reality, their definition of freedom is much different from the reservation society.

"I will not give you up, gotta have some faith in the sound" relates to how in previous decades of our society, people have been putting faith into themselves and ask for freedom, such as fighting for women rights by protesting.
In the novel, regardless of whether having enough courage, Bernard, John and Helmholtz know that even though they are living in the current society, they have some freedom restriction. They couldn't do certain things as they wanted, or be the person they would like to be. The lyrics "There's something else I've got to be" perfectly relates to the identity of three of them.

George Michael is trying to convey his message about societal expectations in contrast to our own desires to be who we are. When someone is in a relationship in modern society, it is common for him or her to be changed by his or her partner, whether it be with clothing, attitude, or personality. However, with the freedom we have today, we don’t have to change our character and have the ability to live the lives that we want. The lyrics “I just hope you understand, sometimes the clothes do not make the man” and “there’s something deep inside of me, there’s someone else I’ve got to be” illustrate this message by telling people to be who they are, not who others want them to be because we have the freedom to do so. This concept can relate to Bernard in the novel. He constantly feels the need to fit in with society, but his unique personality and his desire to be who he wants prevent him from confirming to expectations.

The author’s claim about freedom is although people have the ability to fight for equal rights, the concept of both individual and social freedom is a myth. It is represented in the article when the author claims, “Finally, we have this twist. Freedom doesn't exist at all. If it did, it would only pertain to the individual, and since The Individual is a mythical construct with no meaning, freedom is also a myth” (Rappoport 2). I agree with this claim because regulations created by authorities, like the government, limit one’s ability to have total freedom. However, we don’t think freedom is non existent because individuals do have the choice to do things they want, and most have the freedom to be who they want.
