Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings. They can work in many areas, for instance on construction sites, fitting out shops and bars, and building sets for film and TV.

If you enjoy working with wood and want to put your practical skills to good use, this could be an ideal career for you.

You'll need an eye for detail, good maths skills for working out measurements and the ability to follow technical plans.

Employers usually want people with some construction experience and relevant qualifications. You could start as a joiner's mate or labourer to get some site experience then take further training to qualify. Another common way into this career is through an Apprenticeship scheme.

Courses include:

Level 1 Award in Basic Construction Skills

Level 1 Award in Wood Operations

Level 2 (NVQ) Certificate / Diploma in Wood Occupations

Level 2 Diploma in Construction Crafts (carpentry and joinery)

Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry.

Defines the level of education and examination standard that the job requires, including professional or technical qualifications. Ensure that it is clear what a potential candidate is required to have achieved and why.

 There must be a reason why a qualification is quoted as an essential requirement and this must be clear.  ‘Or equivalent’ should be quoted beside all qualifications in case a qualification has been superseded.  It is best not to quote a grade as an essential requirement i.e. 1st or 2.1 degree, unless there is a specific reason why.  Consideration should always be given to other qualifications of an equivalent level, e.g. overseas qualifications or NVQs.  There may be instances where a qualification is not necessarily essential and relevant experience may be considered in place of a qualification, e.g. a person may have substantial experience of management but may not possess an MBA. It is useful to state the required qualification and add ‘or equivalent relevant experience’.
