"Of Mice and Men is a novella written by author John Steinbeck. Published in 1937, it tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to place in California in search of new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States." - Wikipedia

I've read this story a few times, but I think as I got older, I've been able to understand it more and more. While reading it in high school, it seems to be the story of two young men who get into trouble at a ranch in Salinas. But, I see now there's more to the story than just George and Lennie. It's now a story of loss, social issues, and close examinations of the relationships established between the characters in the story.

The biggest theme that I pulled from this story relates to the relationships shared by the characters within the story. George and Lennie share a relationship unlike any other. Lennie, a simple man who does not understand his strength and does not understand the gravity of his actions, is teamed with George, a man who feels confined in his friendship with Lennie, and states it multiple times. Curly and his wife share an interesting relationship as well, showcasing the longing for a better life from one, and the overbearing dominance of the other. Other characters come in and out, establishing odd connections and show how different the relationship dynamic plays throughout the entire story.
