Tidal energy is produced by the surge of ocean water during the rise and fall of tides. Engineers have developed ways to use the tidal movement to generate electricity in areas where there is a significant tidal range. These methods that have been developed use generators to convert tidal energy into electricity.

There are three different ways to currently capture tidal energy and use it for electricity:
1. Tidal Streams:
Tidal streams are fast flowing bodies of water that are created by tides. A turbine is placed in the tidal streams to capture the energy and a tidal generator is used to convert the energy into electricity. The generators used produce a steady, reliable stream of electricity.
2. Barrage:
This system uses large dams called barrages which can be constructed across tidal rivers, bays, and estuaries. Gates inside the barrage open as the tide rises and at high tide, they close, creating a pool. Then, the water is released through turbines, creating energy at a controlled rate.
3. Tidal Lagoon:
A tidal lagoon is a body of ocean water that is partly enclosed by a natural or manmade barrier. It functions like a barrage, but it can be constructed along the natural coastline. Turbines work as the lagoon is filling and emptying, which generates continuous powe

1. Because water is much more dense than air, tidal energy is more powerful than wind energy
2. It is a renewable energy source and it generates continuous power
3. It is a predictable energy source, because it relies on the moon and the rise and fall of the tides.
4. It is a clean energy source because it does not release any pollutants into the air or water

1. The environmental impact can be severe: land around the tidal range can be disrupted, the change in water level can harm plant and animal life, decrease in salinity affects marine life, and marine animals can be caught in turbine blades
2. It is still being developed and it currently only produces a small amount of power.
3. Investors are not sure that it will make money or benefit consumers.
4. Placing turbines in the ocean is complex and difficult because the machines are large and it can disrupt the tide

Other countries that use this energy source are South Korea, the United Kingdom, Scotland, China, and Canada. It is most commonly used in MEDCs because it is very expensive to construct and regulate.
(tidal power station in Ireland pictured below)

What advances in technology are being pursued for use of this energy source? What does the future hold for this energy source? What does the future use and availability look like?

The global potential for tidal power is enormous, but local geography greatly influences the electricity generation potential. The U.S. alone receives 2,100 terrawatt-hours of wave energy along its coastline. Tapping into one quarter of this energy could produce as much energy as the entire U.S. hydropower system.
No commercial tidal projects have been developed in the United States yet, but several projects are planned for the near future. For example, The AquaEnergy Group is currently designing a one-megawatt wave power pant in Makah Bay, Washington and Ocean Power Technologies has received a permit to explore construction of North America's first utility-scale tidal energy facility off the coast of Oregon.

What factors affect the choice of energy sources by different societies? Why would countries choose to use this source or not use this source?

The factors that could affect a country's choice in whether to use tidal energy or not are whether or not they are on a coast or have a lot of tidal action, whether they have enough money to create the technology used to capture tidal energy, whether they have engineers and scientists there who have a strong understanding of tidal energy facilities, and whether or not they are willing to continue to develop the energy source over time.
Countries might choose to use tidal energy because it is renewable and creates no pollution. Also, it is a predictable energy source that provides constant energy. Countries might choose not to use this source because it is new and currently doesn't create very much energy for electricity or because it is very expensive and difficult to construct the machinery and regulate it at all times.
