The board consists of 19 vertical and 19 horizontal equally spaced, intersecting parallel lines. This forms 361 intersections, referred to as "points."

The overall shape of the board and the size of each square, horizontally and vertically, are slightly different, typically measuring 2.4 cm by 2.3 cm for each square.

There are nine small dots marked on the board, called "stars," with the central dot known as the "Tengen."

2. The Stones

The stones come in black and white colors and are flat and round in shape.

The number of stones should be sufficient to complete a game. In official matches, there are typically 180 stones of each color.

Go Playing Rules

Each player uses stones of one color.

The game starts with an empty board.

Black plays first, followed by white, placing one stone on a point on the board alternately.

Once placed, a stone cannot be moved to another point.

Taking turns to place stones is a right for both players, but either player can forfeit their turn by passing.

Liberties of Stones

A stone on the board has "liberties," which are the empty points directly adjacent to it.

If there are stones of the same color on the adjacent points, they connect to form an inseparable group.

If there are stones of the opposite color on the adjacent points, those liberties do not exist. If a stone loses all its liberties, it cannot remain on the board.

Capturing Stones

The act of removing stones with no liberties from the board is called "capturing." There are two types of capturing:

After placing a stone, if the opponent's stone has no liberties, it should be immediately removed.

After placing a stone, if both players' stones have no liberties, the opponent's stones should be immediately removed.

Forbidden Points

Any point on the board where placing a stone results in no liberties and does not capture any opponent's stones is called a "forbidden point."

Prohibition of Repetition

A move that recreates a previous board position is not allowed.

End of the Game

The game ends when both players agree that all moves have been played.

The game ends if one player resigns during the game.

The game ends if both players pass consecutively.

Alive and Dead Stones

At the end of the game, stones that cannot be captured, as confirmed by both players, are considered alive.

Scoring

The game is scored using the stone counting method. After clearing the dead stones from the board, count the number of points surrounded by each player's alive stones.

Empty points between alive stones of both players are shared equally.

Half of the total points on the board, 180.5 points, is considered the base score.
