The Great Depression had a huge impact on the U.S. and world economies. The depression was a prolonged and more severe recession. A recession is a sustained period of time where the GDP is falling. The GDP is the Gross Domestic Product. Because the stock market crashed, the U.S. entered a recession. What lead the U.S. to a depression was the failing of many banks and over used credit. When FDR was elected as president, the Depression was at its trough. This meant that expansion was going to begin soon. Expansion only really began with World War Two. Slowly the economy would expand back to it's peak.

Throughout the last few decades we have had many economic ups and downs. We have had very low points where recession ends and expansion begins, otherwise known as a trough. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have also had points at which expansion ends and recession begins, or a peak. Of course, inflation has had a lot to do with it, which is the rise in the level of prices for goods and services in an economy over time. This equals too few goods and chasing too many dollars. When the government wants to decrease aggregate demand, it uses a policy called the Contractionary Fiscal Policy. If it wants to increase aggregate demand, it will use Expansionary Fiscal Policy. The government does a lot to help us stay stable such as setting a price ceiling, which is a legal maximum that can be charged for a good. The government also sets a price floor, which is a legal minimum that can be charged for a good.
