He went to Cleveland Central High School and dropped out, then he took one class at Folsom Mercantile College (John D. Rockefeller [Britannica]).

Rockefeller [Britannica]). In 1870 he made the Standard Oil Company with a financier named Henry M. Flagler and his brother William. This business prospered and bought out almost every oil refinery in Cleveland by 1872.

His company had a monopoly on oil. He put stock in other states and he had a board of nine trustees, he was the leader (John D. Rockefeller [Britannica]). This was the first trust and started a pattern for other monopolies.

They tried to bring all the companies back together by creating Standard Oil Company New Jersey, but that too was declared illegal. His business is no longer around today (John D. Rockefeller [Britannica]).

Smaller enterprises had to choose between being absorbed or competing with his vast enterprise. The "Cleveland Massacre" was the name given to his shopping spree. Standard Oil, his firm, owned or operated 90% of all refineries in the United States by 1882. He was a bit philanthropic, but didn't become a philanthropist until much later in his life (The Rockefeller Legacy). In 1897, Rockefeller devoted his life to philanthropy. From 1897 to his death in 1937 he had donated 35 million dollars to the University of Chicago. He helped create the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, which was renamed Rockefeller University. He helped create the Rockefeller Foundation, and the General Education Board. These were very important decisions and helped many people. During his life, he had given away more than 500 million dollars (John D. Rockefeller [Britannica]).

He also formed a trust, which allowed him to grow his corporation even more. He didn't pay fair wages, while he only grew his wealth.
