The novel is set in the summer of 1922 on Long Island, New York. Nick Carraway, the narrator, moves to West Egg, where he becomes neighbors with Jay Gatsby, a mysterious and wealthy man known for his extravagant parties. Nick is drawn into Gatsby's world of luxury and soon learns that Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan, Nick's cousin, who lives in the more upscale East Egg with her husband Tom. Gatsby's parties are lavish, but they are primarily a means for him to reconnect with Daisy, whom he met years ago before going off to fight in World War I. Gatsby's desire to recapture the past is the central theme of the novel. As the story unfolds, we discover that Tom Buchanan is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, and Daisy is unhappy in her marriage. Gatsby asks Nick to arrange a reunion with Daisy, and they rekindle their romance. However, Gatsby's dream of winning Daisy back and living happily ever after is shattered by the harsh reality of the Buchanans' disinterest in him and their destructive behavior.The novel continues in tragedy, with a series of events that lead to the death of Myrtle Wilson and, eventually, Gatsby himself. The Buchanans and their social circle show their true colors, with no one attending Gatsby's funeral except Nick and a few others.
