Many years ago when living in Esperance, I received PATS for a child with severe burns. There was much back and forth with negotiations between the hospitals and doctors, but what it ultimately came down to was the prioritising of the medical condition and the best fit travel for the treatment. I feel that the PATS system and funding go a long way toward providing equitable access to treatment in an environment where it is not financially practical to have every specialist service (or retain staff) and their equipment in every town or region.
