Many Americans buy merchandise from all over the world because of globalization. Globalization is the development of a global, or worldwide, society. The world's trade was not always like this. This growth is called economic interdependence. Manufacturing shoes has changed a lot over the years. Sneakers were first made in the mid-1800's and later were mostly made for basketball. In the 1950's sneakers became more of a fashionable shoe for men and women. To make a single pair of sneakers, you have to hire 120 workers to put over 50 pieces together on the shoe. Back then shoes were made in the countries they were sold in, but shoes got more complex that they needed more workers to create the masterpieces. WIth that it got more and more expensive to hire workers, so sneaker companies moved production offshore or to other countries. They first moved to South Korea because of its large pool of low wage workers, factories to manufacture, and shipping ports for raw materials. Sneaker companies compete with other sneaker companies withs style and comfort. THey afton hire professional athletes and musicians for a greater income. For journeys across the United States it only takes a week or longer.  FUN FACT: A truck leaving in Memphis in the morning can reach 75% of the nation's population by the next day. Sneakers are distributed to 18,000 stores in the United States. With companies putting factories in poor countries they produce jobs and that helps the workers improve their standard of living. With low working situations it allows the companies to sell the sneakers for low prices which allows consumers rich and poor can buy products that were once considered luxuries that only rich could afford. Many factories produce deadly fumes into the air and dump toxic waste into rivers. They also can have workers work long hours with really low pay. This happened because countries lack worker protection laws. Globalization is here to stay and is likely to increase. One reason for this is that poor countries see globalization as a path out of poverty. Another reason is that money now moves freely around the world. Most of this money was to start new businesses and in urban areas. Africa had least amount of foreign investment. These materials that are made for these parts come from only a few places in the world. The upper part of the shoes is called The Complex Upper. The Complex Upper is made of natural materials such as cotton or leather. Leather comes from cattle in Texas, Venezuela and shipped to South Korea to be manufactured. The midsole is usually squishy. It is made up of plastic and foam padding which are found in Saudi Arabia. This is also manufactured in South Korea. The "tough" outer sole is made of synthetic and natural rubber treads.
