With respect to my goals, what was my proudest moment?
My proudest moment was when I made my head gear and presented it to the class. I made my head gear with my classmates, Karine and Jolee, and we tried to conceptualise anger. We had similar ideas that took off during the discussion, and we managed to finish making the head gear for Jolee. When we presented it to the class, I was very proud of my work, and was happy to see that other people liked it as well.

With respect to my goals, what was my greatest challenge?
My greatest challenge was lack of time and time constraints. During the last week of 'making the mask', I had to go overseas to compete in a competition, and my teammate Laura was left to work on it alone. Because of time differences and myself being incredibly busy, communicating was difficult, but we managed to pull through and complete the artwork in time for the last week of photo taking. I was glad that Laura managed to finish the project, and was quite pleased with the end result.

What can I do to improve?
To improve, I can try to come up with more inspired and original concept ideas. However, this process takes time, so apart from that, I can work on and improve my technical skills in art so that my manipulation of materials is better and more creative.

With respect to my goals, what was my proudest moment?
My proudest moment was when I presented my final dish for the practical test. I was very worried about my dish at the time, because I had originally made two, and one broke when I took it out of the oven. Thus, I was very stressed and worried about the remaining tart, and I tried my best to salvage it. I was very pleased when the teacher actually complimented my dish on the plating and the overall healthiness of the dish. I was also relieved to see that it was completely cooked through. After the evaluation, I tasted the dish, and was proud that I liked it.

With respect to my goals, what was my greatest challenge?
My greatest challenge was buying ingredients for exploration lessons. Because I tend to return home late (due to RS and other factors), there are times when I am unable to buy ingredients or my ingredients require a recipe that takes too long. Thus, I had to borrow ingredients from my aunt (who lives next door), and she helped me to pack them every time I had an exploration lesson. I am very grateful for her involvement in my learning, and I was able to overcome this challenge.

What can I do to improve?
To improve, I can practice my cooking skills and increase the difficulty of my recipes. I can also push myself to cook whole meals more often, and try different genres of cooking (e.g. French, Italian, etc). This will not only broaden my scope of cooking, it will also allow me to learn more about food culture worldwide.

With respect to my goals, what was my proudest moment?
It was likely when i was performing the piece "I want it that way" by the backstreet boys with my classmates. It is a song i enjoy very much, and I was happy that it turned out well and my classmates liked it as well. I was especially proud when the feedback we got for that performance was that we were cohesive, and also upbeat. I was incredibly proud when i was told my singing was good (albeit too loud).

With respect to my goals, what was my greatest challenge?
(Eg. The greatest challenge was to be different from other groups as there is temptation to copy others.)

What can I do to improve?
I think what I can improve is in my tendency to overpower in performance. as stated earlier, in one of the performances, I was told my singing was too loud, and that it overwhelmed the other instruments. I hope to improve on this and be more considerate, especially because my team mates had also worked hard on their respective instruments and deserved to shine during the performance. I also want to be more patient in teaching and in being taught. I tend to lose my patience easily because I want processes to be quick and efficient. I have learnt that this is not always the most effective method, and I will try and improve on this.

11/1/9
1. taste
compared to miss lee's cupcakes, the cupcakes made by myself and jia ying were slightly moister. i believe this is mainly due to the fact that miss lee had left her cupcakes in the oven for a longer time and the moisture in the cupcakes had evaporated slightly. this was also due to the fact that we used more batter for one cupcake, causing them to be slightly more moist. furthermore, our cupcakes had a slightly tangy burnt taste to them. as you can see, the bottom of our cupcakes look slightly burnt.

2. texture
closed/ compact - our cupcakes were denser than miss lee's, and had smaller air pockets in them. perhaps during the mixing of the batter, the air in our cupcakes had been mixed out, causing it to be slightly heavy.
height - our cupcakes had rounded slightly more than miss lee's. i suspect this was due to the self-raising flour, and the fact that more batter was added into one cupcake shells.
spongy - miss lee's cupcakes were spongier than ours. this was probably due to the fact that there were more air pockets, and thus the cupcakes tended to be bouncier and more soft. ours were slightly firm at the top, which could also have been a result of the baking time.

overall, i slightly preferred miss lee's cupcakes to our own, due to the fact that it was lighter, and was baked just right.

25/1/19
today was an interesting experience. firstly, i had never heard of brownies being steamed, and was compelled to find out the difference between steamed and baked brownies. secondly, i was very excited to learn how to bake bread, as i had heard recounts from relatives about how difficult it was to master bread making, and wondered if i would also face challenges.
this week, i made the brownies. they were very rich and thick in texture, which i enjoyed. i particularly liked cutting the chocolate, as the smell of it permeated the air. i think i will be employing a similar method to cook in the future when i make brownies. i also think i would like to bake bread during the experimentation week to challenge myself.
secondly, the difference between steamed a baked brownies. i did not have a very clear memory of baked brownies, but i remember a stark difference in the two types of brownies was that the steamed brownies were much lighter and resembled a cake, whereas the baked brownies were fudgier and richer. overall, i think i like these two methods equally, and will be experimenting in my own time using these methods.

8/2/19
EXPLORATION 2
evaluation on:
1. order of work
- i think that for the order of work, i was able to work in a reasonable order. firstly, i made my pie dough, and then blind baked the pie. then, i made the apple filling by browning butter and then mixing it with apple. then, when the pastry was done blind baking, i took it out of the oven and filled it with apple. lastly, i placed the pie back in the oven to finish cooking. overall, one thing that could be improved was to cook the apples first and remove the water so that it would not leak, and also i would like to have baked my pie longer to make it firm.
2. management
- time: i was able to complete the baking on time and within the set timeframe, however, i think in the future i will bake the pie for a longer time, as the pie today was too soft and broke apart immediately after coming out of the oven.
- unit: i think in the future, unit management can be improved. today my partner, jia ying, and i took a longer time to clean our desk and wash our utensils. for future reference, i will work on keeping my desk neater such that i do not have to spend so much time cleaning it.
3. product
- i am not incredibly satisfied with my pie. i would have liked the pie to hold its shape, and for the apple filling to be sweeter. in my own time, i will improve the pie according to the feedback given. however, one thing i am pleased with is that i learnt a new skill: browning butter

feedback:
- either cook the apples before baking or bake the apples for a longer time.
- arrange the apples nicely, such that the bottom won't be soggy.

in what ways have you met the task demands?

rather than a sweet pastry, i used fruits to garnish and as my main dish, which made my dish healthy. i was satisfied with my plating, and my rationale behind my choice in presentation: i chose a relatively smaller, black plate in order to contrast with my medium sized dish, my bright fruits and my use of icing sugar. the lemon tart was relatively difficult to manipulate, especially because it was a recipe that was meant to take a longer time, and although i am not very happy with my manipulation, i was quite satisfied with my end result. f

reflect on the practical test session.

before the test session, i was nervous about my dish. in fact, the night before i had practiced my dish until midnight, and i was worried that my lack of sleep would affect my performance, so i decided to make two in case one of them did not turn out well. i think i made a good start to my dish, and i was quite focused on my work. i did, however, make some poor decisions, such as forgetting to turn on my oven, thus my product had to bake for a longer time than it should have. i was very happy with the way my dough turned out, because i had struggled with the manipulation of dough prior to the test session. i was also satisfied with my lemon filling, as after i tasted it, i found it was tangy and contrasting to my pate sucree. i panicked when one of my tartlets did break, and i tried to be careful with my second one. during the last five minutes of the test, i was very anxious that i would not be able to serve my dish on time and that my dish was undercooked. however, i think that my dish turned out well, and i am happy with my performance today.

were you able to manage time?

because this as a dish that was meant to be cooked in a longer time, i did struggle a bit with time management, and i was afraid that i would not be on time to serve my dish. i ended up serving my dish right on the dot, which i am not very satisfied with. i think in the future i can afford to plan out the order of business better, and make better decisions in order to use my time well.

did you face difficulties? how did you overcome them?
i faced many difficulties during this test. firstly, my original recipe took too long. to overcome this, i researched online on whether or not it was necessary to chill my pate sucree before i baked it, and i found that it was not very necessary. this helped me save a lot of time.

secondly, one of my tartlets broke as i brought it out of the oven. however, i had already planned for this to happen, considering the tartlets were quite delicate, and i baked two just in case. i was more careful with my second one, and i took pains to ensure that it was cool enough to transport it.

how would you have done it differently?
firstly, i would have wanted my dough to be a bit more moist, such that it was easier to manipulate. secondly, i would have liked to try making the meringue. i decided against doing this because i knew that making the meringue would have taken up too much time, but in the future i would like to challenge myself. thirdly, i would like to have made better decisions and exercised more caution. i made some careless mistakes during the test, such as forgetting to turn on the oven and accidentally adding in too much flour. thus i would have liked to make better decisions in order to be more efficient.

reflect on the food blogging process.

i enjoyed the food blogging process very much. food, cooking and baking are passions of mine, and it was good that i had a platform to express my passion. i also think that food blogging allows us to immortalise the journey through FAD, and it is nice to know that perhaps in five years, i will be able to look back at my Padlet and remember FAD in RGS. also, i think it is a very effective way of tracking our skills and the recipes we use. if we have made certain recipes, we can reference Padlet in order to see how to improve it on our own time.

how useful were the nutritional tools?

i think they are quite useful. they allowed me to understand how the food that i eat is not always good for me and that there are healthier options i can choose, both when i buy food, buy groceries and when i cook.

how manageable were the manipulative skills for you?

the manipulative skills were quite manageable for me. i was able to learn them quickly and apply them in my cooking. although some of the skills, such as rubbing in, require some outside practice, i was able to master them eventually.

how purposeful are the investigative activities in helping you come up with your final creation?

they were very purposeful. i had a hard time choosing what i wanted to make because there were many dishes that i personally enjoyed making and eating. i think the investigative activities helped me narrow down my choices in terms of choosing what could be made in the one hour i had, and choosing what would be the healthiest option. i am very pleased that i ended up making my lemon tartlet.

we were also tasked with making a hat. this was the highlight of the class, as during om, i was also tasked with hat making (as part of my creative problem), and i wanted to see other interpretations of a hat. the emotion that jolee was trying to express in her artwork was 'anger'. her first artwork showed her face being covered by her hat, and bulging upwards. karine and i split the work, and i created the base of the hat and the chains, while karine made the triangular pieces. i had to measure jolee's head multiple times so that the hat would be able to stay on her head, and i had to use different pieces of cardboard with different degrees of bendability to make the hat strong enough to hold the pieces together but soft enough to mold to her head. i also made a band at the bottom so the hat could be worn tightly. for the chains, i made a cardboard choker, which i cut from a long piece of cardboard and secured with masking tape. then i rolled up pieces of a4 size paper, and stuck it together, also using tape. i had a lot of fun doing this activity, and i hope to do creative work like this again.

The artwork Laura and I created was based on the theme "Inner beauty". We had a keyhole and a key, with which we tried to represent the act of unlocking, or the act of realisation of beauty. We made it such that it was hard for the wearer to unlock it themselves, as we believed that self-realisation is difficult. We also tried not to have any colour on the outside of the art, as we wanted it to be exactly like the medium we used, cardboard. Cardboard is often overlooked, as is beauty that is hidden. Our artwork was not a contrasting idea of ugly and pretty, rather, it was the contrast between unremarkable and remarkable, to reflect many of the people who also feel this way. Our artwork is a moving piece, thus, there is an opening mechanism and a closing mechanism. We made cardboard hands in order to cover up certain parts of the face, in an effort to make sure the wearer stayed anonymous. This was to make sure our idea of being "invisible" was communicated. Lastly, on the inside of the panels, there are flowers that are 3D and red. Red is a very vibrant colour, and it is seen as an icon of beauty. When we were researching, my partner and I found that the most obvious representation of beauty was flowers. However, we found this to also be quite cliche. Thus, if we had more time, we would try to explore the complexities of beauty more rather than focus on the technical parts of the art work. Altogether, we are satisfied with our work, as it has represented very simply and succinctly, the idea of beauty being in the places we never expect.

I used to think that art was a very static form of expression, and that modern art had little to no value in the art world. I did not see the significance behind the art work, neither did I bother to look into it. Now I see that, despite its bizarreness, modern art and art at large holds meaning for many people. Its impact is also huge, whether it be political statements or mental states, art has a huge range of significance. From now, I hope to not just see art at face-value, and take into account the stories behind the art as well.

This was the project done by my classmates Jia Ying and Sarah, symbolising inner beauty. What I like about this piece of work is that it has a dynamic part which can be moved or placed in different angles to mean different things. I also like how much attention to detail this artwork has, sometimes taking inspiration from real life and communicating it through art. This artwork was based on the phrase "eye-opening", on the theme of "inner beauty", hinting at the fact that when inner beauty is revealed, it is often an eye-opening experience. I liked how different materials were used in the art work (wire, cardboard of different shapes and structure) to bring together a structure that seems to hang forward. It is definitely an interesting piece.

It was also difficult to keep a steady rhythm and sing, because I wanted to focus on singing.

What do you understand about the music concepts of interlocking rhythm, ostinato, steady pulse, accompaniment?
I understand that accompaniment is a beat or an alternative melody that goes along with the main melody.

What is a role music can play in a community?
Music can bring people together.

the way i interpreted the music is divided into three parts:
1. the spy sneaking through the castle. because of the loud percussion and the sudden bursts of timpani, i imagined a spy sneaking through a castle and encountering enemies. in my mind, he is hiding behind a brick pillar waiting as the enemy approaches.
2. because of the glockenspiel, i imagined a mouse scurrying around on its tip toes. it is a very delicate, light sound, and it is quite different from the heavy strong percussion and trumpet from before.
3. the music surges with violin, cello, double bass and other string instruments. it is very reminiscent of older Disney movies, where a princess dances with a prince at a ball. it is much more ambient and melodic.

what did i learn about the ways effects can be created through music sounds?
i learnt that dissonance is a technique that can be used to spike certain emotions, and that not all pieces must be melodic in order to be "nice" or "classical". in this piece in particular, dissonance is used to spark fear and confusion.
(a) use of timbre/ instrumentation
different instruments have different timbres, and it changes the way a piece flows. (e.g. at the beginning, instruments with darker timbre. in the middle, instruments with lighter timbre.)
(b) texture
the texture of the piece often dictates how we translate that into art/ life. different textures give us different emotions.
(c) dynamics
loudness and softness can both be incorporated into a piece to make it sound more interesting and unique.

i had a lot of fun during these eight weeks of music. i think i have grown in terms of how i relate to other people in a group, and also in terms of my musical skill. i was more able to work with a team and for a team, and was able to also improve as a leader. in the past, i would get stressed and irritated if things did not go my way, and this would cause me to have a sour mood, which held a group back. however, now i have learnt to be more patient with people, and rather than getting upset, i now help people if they need it, and i too seek help more readily if i do not know how to do something. i have also improved in terms of my musical appreciation. as i have always liked EDM and also classical music, i was pleased that i was able to listen to both in the same lesson, and also learn more about musical theory. i had a lot of fun doing EDM on garageband, and i would like to continue learning. i enjoy making music, and these lessons helped me fulfill that passion.

my proudest moment:
it was likely when i was performing the piece "i want it that way" by the backstreet boys with my classmates. it is a song i enjoy very much, and i was happy that it turned out well and my classmates liked it as well. i was especially proud when the feedback we got for that performance was that we were cohesive, and also upbeat. i was incredibly proud when i was told my singing was good (albeit too loud).

what i can improve:
i think what i can improve is in my tendency to overpower in performance. as stated earlier, in one of the performances, i was told my singing was too loud, and that it overwhelmed the other instruments. i hope to improve on this and be more considerate, especially because my team mates had also worked hard on their respective instruments and deserved to shine during the performance. i also want to be more patient in teaching and in being taught. i tend to lose my patience easily because i want processes to be quick and efficient. i have learnt that this is not always the most effective method, and i will try and improve on this.

overall, i am pleased with my performance during this module. i hope to learn more about the guitar, be able to play more instruments, and improve my singing.
