The design aspect of the project was fun, generating the different ideas and finally choosing one and being able to then evolve that idea was good. I went through various thought processes from using real food to using real food and freezing it to using photographs of food. Finally i settled on a more childlike and fun visual of play dough (other brands are available!).
The physical aspects were difficult for me but through good communication I was able to work with Wes and construct something that I was very happy with. During the animation process it stood up well. It did mark the board but it was easily sorted. There were no major issues with regards to melting under the lighting. The bacon was hard to move as it such to the board slightly but with a flat knife we were able to move it.

Next time I would probably look at more stable equipment. The camera was not steady on the tripod and it kept slipping and as you can see from the final result the objects appear to move towards the top of the screen as the camera slipped down. I would look at professional lights and maybe Dragon frame as an alternative software. All these may give it a more professional look, even though I am happy with what I was able to achieve it could be better overall with some simple changes.

From the general feedback from people that have viewed it, it has been positive. Many were impressed with what I have done, some of these however were not from the course and therefore were not looking at it from a 'animators' point of view. They did however say many of the same things that I have also said and also mirror some of the paddle feedback. Great idea but with a few tweaks and better equipment, could have a better overall look to it.
Apart form the Ketchup bottle it was all my own work (with the physical support). I wanted sound effects but wast sure what to use, when I think of breakfast I think of sizzling and therefore wanted to make the audience hungry and not only see breakfast on screen but have them taste it to! Stirring up some emotive senses. As mentioned, yes, with better lighting the screen could be brighter and whiter and also with a stable camera position, the animation could be more central to the screen.

I'm pleased that i've made Jay Hungry. It proves the concept works. I also like the ketchup although it was difficult to do as Wes had to hold the bottle, hit the keys and add the red play dough.... It works well though. The constructive criticism again mirrors my thoughts. Dark and close to top edge. Definitely something to consider in the future. Some other great positive comments from Adikah and Cameron. I could definitely look at evolving it to move it onto a plate or jumping out of a frying pan for example.

Although we were unable to add in frames 7 and 8 I believe we still had a complete animation. The storyboards and graphic narrative gave me a clear idea and guide of where i needed to be throughout the process and I was able to refer to this thought out to see what item was coming in from what direction. Also looking at what the final picture needed to be. I did alter it slightly in that I has most food items coming on one by one rather than all together. This lengthened the Ident which was better I think overall.
I think, although possibly basic, my artwork was clear and this acted as a good and clear guide for me to follow throughout.

I have already mentioned what I would perhaps change in regards software and hardware etc, however, if I were to do another one I would definitely look at another ident as it was very enjoyable and short and focussed. I may look at making it more complex, maybe some character design or incorporating more angles rather than just a birds eye view. I enjoyed working with the food theme as there are many ideas that can come from this. In my pre production i references the PEZ animations, especially the avocado one, I thought it was brilliant so maybe I could be more daring and look at something like this on a smaller scale. I'd look at using more props and a more stable substance to work with other than play dough, although i didn't rally experience many problems I'm sure i could achieve a more professional look with products designed for this purpose.

I really like the models and sound effects, however the screen is a little dark, it could definitely be brighter & whiter. The letters also appear to be a little high, they could be slightly more central. Overall a great animation.

Makes me hungry for cooked breakfast! I especially liked the hand coming in at the end to make the 's' with the ketchup bottle - it works really well. The movement is smooth but I would say the lighting is a bit dark and the top of the letters are a bit close to the edge.

This was really cool, i like how you used a different food for each letter, and i liked the use of the human interaction with the stop-motion hand. The only thing that got me was that it was a bit dark, which can be fixed via post!

This stop motion looks great! The movement flows, I thought the concept of the breakfast, with the sizzling in the background, making a Notts TV ident was really clever. I think the only thing you need to improve on is the lighting. Maybe something you can add is if you could put the food in a frying pan or on a plate would make it look even better.

Story Board Evaluation

I wanted to design the storyboards in a specific way, so that they directly represented my animation. Therefore after playing around with various options and ideas I decided to go with a table theme/breakfast theme. The only added complication to designing my boards are that I am unable to do some of the physical aspects and have to communicate these ideas across to my Teaching Assistant, however, having a long standing relationship we are able to achieve this with no real problem.

Nothing says tablecloth like gingham so I decided to go with this. I looked at various patterns, created 3 different squares and assembled them in the standard pattern. Once the background was established I was able to add the other elements, such as the plates & cutlery etc. I then took my pre production storyboards and pasted them onto each plate. With some tweaking, directional arrows a more details transitional explanation they were complete. Once the ideas were there it was just a case of putting them all together and once this started to happen it was a relatively easy and enjoyable process.

Having the Story Boards as a reference at this point made the animation a much simpler process. Having to do the animation without reference would not have been an easy task. The boards gave me a step by step process, knowing roughly how each food is animated either collectively or on its own. I was able to change certain aspects like animating most of the food one by one rather than all at once or in pairs etc. I was able to set out all of the items on the board to match my final square (number 6 in this case), take a picture and then i'd know what my final shot should actually look like at the end.

Storyboards make the entire process much easier, taking out the guess work and make for a much smoother and stress free animation process.
