In fences by August Wilson it take place how not as many African Americans had much opportunities in life to make their better lives than they had before back in the 1950s' , the struggle against racism and segregation entered the mainstream of American life. In The awakening by kate chopin during the time in the 1800s' it was hard times for women because women didn't have no independence in american and never had many opportunities in life but learn how to be a house wife and take care of the family. both showed how as women and African american they had the same problems with being accepted in life. 
To look for their own voices instead of following the old ways and try to be something that your not or someone that your not.
