In a society where girls are treated based off looks, it can be difficult to fit in when you look different from the wanted standards. Some girls hips may fit society's standards and are skinny while some may be disregarded and looked down upon. In the vignette The Monkey Garden, it writes "I closed my eyes like tight starts so that I wouldn't, but I did. My face felt hot. Everything inside hiccupped,"(pg 97). Esperanza realizes as she grows up how friends don't always seem to be friends like with Sally. She starts fearing growing up but at the same time, still wants to be beautiful. She is cautious, fearful, but also has a sense of humor and delight. In the vignette Laughter she describes herself and her sister Nenny to have a loud laugh which can correlate to her unique personality that she was different than most of the other girls on her street. Additionally, more indirect examples of her character is how she acts around people. She can become fearful or cautious and even distrusting. Esperanza's ignorance leads her to be fearful. For example, she doesn't speak to the owner of the pawnshop because of his race. Another instance is when she realizes how scary growing up is when she encounters drunken men on the street. Esperanza describes her as beautiful but a sad girl due to how her father treats her at home. Esperanza asks questions to Sally like "Sally, do you sometimes wish you didn't have to go home?"(page 82). The tone of this question is sad and remorseful. Sally is a pretty girl trapped in an abusive household. She is starved of love and believes that her father still loves her. "He never hits me hard. She said her mama rubs lard on all the places where it hurts. Then at school she'd say she fell," It shows how fearful Sally is of her father but at the same time, Stockholm syndrome started developing within Sally in order to cope with the abuse. Sally's actions describe a girl who's been abused to the point where can't tell what's love or what is abuse. For an example, in The Family of Little Feet, Mr. Benny says "You girls too young to be wearing shoes like that,"(pg 41). It describes how judgmental society can be towards girls versus guys. Girls get criticized for way more even by just the way they dress even though there isn't an age limit to wearing high heels. It causes Esperanza to not feel ready for heels and growing up. Additionally, in Red Clowns, Esperanza realizes Sally betrayed her saying "Sally you lied, you lied. He wouldn't let me go He said I love you , I love you Spanish girl,"(pg 100). The repetition in the phrases "you lied" and "I love you" demonstrates Esperanza's feeling of hopelessness.
