Today we got introduced to units 9 & 10 and given an outline of what we are required to do for these units. We got given our assignment brief for the first term, which is to make a short horror film / thriller.
To get into this project, I started researching film festivals for my work to possibly be submitted to for competitions and then I went into market research. For this, I started researching Scaresville, which is a scare attraction. To continue with this research, I will research rides, games, clothes and music. This research has given me the chance to see what is out there for horror and what appeals to certain people.
Tomorrow, I will continue this research to build up my research portfolio

Today we went through what codes and conventions are used in horror films - For this, Leila showed us a few examples and short clips from scream to explain what she meant by it all. Following on from this, I completed a worksheet showing film examples of different codes and conventions and explained the effects on the audience. for example, stormy weather puts the audience on edge as the bad weather suggests something bad is going to happen. I learnt from this what techniques I could use within my short horror film, for example, playing on the weather to get my target audience's attention. I also, know what is out already and can ensure I make mine more unique and original, This helps me build up my research portfolio and tomorrow we will be doing a practical lesson, as well as seeing IT 2017 to help with this research.

Today, we looked at some scenes from horror movies, to see what techniques they used. After this, we spent the rest of the day in groups and we experimented with the lighting techniques. I worked with Gabbie, Chloe and Kirsten. We had some difficulties setting up the jib as we struggled to screw the camera and certain plates onto the equipment. Once we got it set up, we began shooting a scene to use a silhouette which went really well, however, the jib's handle suddenly fell out from the rest of the jib. To our confusion, we did not see why as we did checks when first putting it together to see if everything was in place. Due to this, we ran out of time to get much filming done before lunch. We packed the jib away and continued with our other lighting techniques, using handheld, as they were relatively easy shots. Eventually, we got all that we wanted done. Next time I will be more aware of how tight every thing on the jib needs to be and be more aware of what support is on the jib. After the task was completed, we walked over to the cinema for a trip to see the remake of IT.

Today, I started out by editing our lighting techniques from Thursday on Premiere pro. We had a few technical difficulties when starting up premiere pro however, we got this resolved by closing the programme and reopening it. Once the difficulties were over, we edited in fades, and captions to say what the lighting techniques used were, on the particular videos, for example, silhouettes, shadows etc. Once this was completed, I wrote a short film review for the film IT which we saw on Thursday.
After lunch we did some experimenting with foley and created sound effects that could fit with what we edited previously/ what could work for a horror film. For example, we recorded a scream, strange noises, and created a heart-beat sound using a t-shirt. These sound effects all went well and we did not face any problems when recording. We recorded in the animation studio which was a great place for us as there is a cupboard which has a lot of props which we took advantage of. I hope to practice a bit more with creating foley for horror films.

Hopefully soon, we will start looking into apprenticeships as I do not want to apply to uni. After tutorial, we looked at some you tube clips to see how effective music is in horror films.I learnt from this that stringed music is very effective as it builds tension and gives it an erry sound. Once we finished this task, we wrote up a short paragraph on a horror film of our choice and explained how the music is effective, I chose a scene from Annabelle. After lunch, we experimented on garage band to create our own pieces of music that could be effective.

Today, I experimented with special effects makeup. I have used liquid latex in the past however, this was the first time I used tissue to layer it up. I found this tricking to begin with as the liquid layex made the tissue so wet that it ripped in places but once paint was added it covered these areas up. I found that the concealer to get it to blend on the arm, did not match his arm in the slightest but this was eventually covered once the paint was added. i learn how to layer the tissue up for it to look effective and how the inside of the cut needs to be black to show it as the deepest part and then the outside of it to be red and blended out. To improve my first trial, I needed to blend the red paint and bruising colours a littlte further up the arm to make it look more realistic but I ran out of time for this. I also learnt how to use the sponge to darken other areas etc to make the bruising look realistic. After this, my partner then tried doing a burnt hand look on me which looked really effective with the different shades of red and bruising, and he layered the tissue on well to make the texure look horribly realistic. After lunch, I made a fake eye, i learnt from this, that it is extremely fidly. Kirsten and I got to grips with this very well. It looked really good and we done it successfully and it looks realistic. I would like to experiment more with the techniques done today.

Today, Gabbie peer assessed diary logs. I have taken into account what was said and I will improve on some of the entries as I need to add some more detail especially on the impacts of my work and the effectiveness. After this I wrote up the definition of Semiotics and how they are used within horror films. I now understand that this is the study of symbolism and how horror films use this throughout to build tension. For example, red signals danger. After this, I looked at the BBFC - this is the British Board of film classification. this will be helpful for me, especially when making my own horror film as I understand what age rating will be appropriate for my target audience. I will refer to this when making my film when coming up with my idea. In addition, I made a shared padlet with Gabbie and Chloe and researched the film The Birds which was made in the 1960's and we looked at the semiotics used and the target audience. We looked at the 'loss of belief', Th use of music and role assuming This was referring back to what I researched earlier on in the day. We presented our findings to the class and then we listened to everyone else's presentations and took notes down to get an understanding of the semiotics used in films from the 1960's up to 2010.

Today we watched some short clips from horror films to look at the narrative used, and the music, for us to take some ideas from. For example, I will look back at Silence of the lambs as I liked the way the music was used in a scene we watched. After this, we were told to start drafting a script for our ideas however, I made a list of what I needed to do for my research portfolio for task 1. Following on, I made a survey monkey to get some audience feedback on what they like in horror films etc (Market research) I then made a timeline of the characteristics used in horror films from 1960's-2000's.

Today we looked at what techniques are used in foley within horror films. After we discussed this, we got into groups and chose a scene from a horror film and recreated the foley on top. My group chose the lights out scene from the woman in black when the toys start moving around when the man is in the room. We faced a few difficulties during this task as the main focus was making the sounds from the toys, it was difficult to find objects that would create the sounds we wanted. We worked in the animation studio where there were loads of props to use for sounds but we struggled to think about how they could be used. Despite this, we got a few sound effects recorded, a rattling sound etc but we ended up having to find a music box tune from free sounds as we could not create the music box sound from the scene. I think we picked quite a hard scene to recreate as it had so many different toy sounds and we had limited supply of props to use for them. But I hope o practice more with foley and possibly recreate foley from a scene I choose and do it at home as sound operator is a job role I am becoming more interested in.

I ensured I had the criteria needed for the pitch and then practice my pitch and timed it to see if it reaches the 3 minute mark. Mine lasted 4 minutes which is good because I means I know I can simplify things more and still be within the time limit. I looked into the psychographics and demographics of my target audience as well to make it more detailed and in depth. Everything went well and I am ready for tomorrow and hopefully my pitch goes well.

Today, our director Mollie was unfortunately not in which meant the team were very limited to what we could do as she did not confirm the location for the film. Due to this, we could not do any risk assessments, location recce, shot list, storyboard etc. Chloe and I came up with an idea to use the animation room as our set as we were unsure of locations. We came up with the idea to decorate the boards in the room to make it look like a bedroom, and then just film the stair scene at someone's house. Eventually, our director agreed to use the animation room (in a group chat) but did not want to take the stair scene out. I did not want to use my house for a location as they wanted to bring in a child actor/ a stranger to be our actor and I did not feel comfortable allowing them into my home. Once I made this aware to my team, they then decided to use friends from college to be our actors. Mollie then agreed to film at her house. In the meantime, Chloe and I did some experimental shots on the stairs and in the room. I am going to edit this footage and experiment colour grading them within this week. Hopefully tomorrow, my group get more paper work done

The meeting didn't settle much of our disputes as we didn't address them, we just spoke about what needed to be done and what had been discussed previously. I found out that the group decided that Mollie wanted to get the equipment instead of me which was decided yesterday. A member mentioned the equipment would be safer in Mollie's house than in my car but I had to take it back to college on the Thursday. Today I filled out the parking permission forms to park in the college to bring the equipment back. As well as this, I wrote up a job analysis sheet for my job role. After this, Chloe and I did some experimental shots with lighting around the college so we knew we could use the LED Lights successfully.

Wednesday 17th October 2017 - today was supposed robe the fist day of filming, when we arrived at mollies house, she asked what we wanted to do and we asked if we could have a look round the house and we did. we realised that the house wasn't very suitable for the ideas our director had for the production but we tried our best to overcome the problems for when we would be filming. Then I went to set up the lighting a camera in the living room for the first scene. this took longer than expected and we had the problem of blowing a fuse when we plugged a light in that the director (its her house) did not tell us about. then after a while the rest of the team came in when the lights went out to see what had happened, they did not ask how the set up was going and only said to each other "lets go into the other room" and we did not know what this for or why, we found out later for ourselves that they were creating the skin, which they had said they were going to do that night. this took them the entire day and we got no filming done. Jayne can di did some practise shots to see how the scenes would play out but today was a little disappointing as we thought we would be able to at least start the filming today.

This meant we could not film the skin scene until it was dry. We tried to come up with ways to dry it quicker but this didn't work and took up some crucial filming time. Today we started with the living room scene and this took about an hour and took around 8 takes of just the first shot. I had to mention that we should limit the number of takes on a scene or we could spend the whole day filming just a few scenes when we needed to get everything done today. Lighting was a big issue for this filming as in many places it was far to bright and others far too dark. I helped Chloe with lighting and we tried to be creative with fixing the lighting issues but despite our best efforts it looked grainy and some scenes too dark. I hope to brighten and darken some scenes up in editing. We did not get all the filming done and there is no end scene - As well as this, throughout the day, the Director kept mentioning that the storyboard was incorrect so we did not have a clear plan.

I started the Rushes Log ready for when editing is to be started. There is no more work for me to do until filming next Tuesday and then adding the new film clips to the rushes log.

I am feeling rather sceptical of the filming day, I feel like it will be another incredibly awkward day as we still have some issues, however, I plan to go into Mollies house and hope for the best.

Today, I worked along side Chloe and we went to the room opposite the animation studio to film our parts for the directors commentary. For our set up, we moved a red sofa from the animation room and positioned it in front of a computer in our room. For my background, we wanted it to feature an aspect of editing in it to show the audience what my role is. To do this, I logged onto the computer and brought up premiere pro and left this on in the background. Similarly, Chloe, our camera operator put a camera and tripod next to her to show some filming equipment to link to her role. In our interviews, we made sure we thought about the rule of thirds by positioning ourselves off to the side slightly and not looking directly at the camera. I learnt this technique on my level 2 course when we created a website, I created the interviews for it and I had to be aware of the positioning of the interviewees at all times. We had a list of questions that a member from another team read out whilst one of us filmed and the other was the interviewee. An issue I found with this was that I had not had time to rehearse so the questions seemed to catch me off guard however, after 12 takes, I got mine done (I was giggling at the beginning when trying to compose myself)

today was the third day of filming - I collected Chloe from college and then arrived at Mollies, ready to start filming. To my surprise, we all got on very well and we laughed all day and got everything we needed done to a high standard. The lighting was much better this time around, I feel as though this was due to communication being better and the settings on the camera being better suited for the scenes than before. I am really happy all of us have overcome our issues and as a group we have readjusted and started again. We all sat an ate our lunch together instead of in separate rooms and this made me much more apart of the group - I can for once say I am looking forward to tomorrow to work with them all again.

Today, we tried to film a shot of the doll as a shillouette as this is the last scene we need and luckily can be done at college. We all went to the animation room and tried to use the cupboard in the back corner as a place to make the shillouetted doll in a door way - This unfortunately did not work even after many attempts with light alterations and clearing the cupboard out as best we could. This was an error made by us, we did not realise how much stuff was in the cupboard which meant there was not enough room for the doll and the lights to fit in there and for the lights to bounce of the walls. We tried another location, the top of a set of stairs as there'd be enough room up there however, there was no where to plug the large LEDS in so we called it quits for the day and said we would try again in the motion room tomorrow.

We struggled again, there are so many places to look within the college but no good places to create a shilouette with enough space around for the equipment etc - We have been offered a cupboard between the business room and media staff room - we will see this tomorrow.

Chloe and I went to see the cupboard Leila offered to us but, after having a look around, we came to the conclusion that once again, there was too much in the cupboard and it was not suitable to bounce the light off the walls. This cupboard is an ideal place for future filming and I would like to keep it in mind for other projects. We were told we could move some things around in the cupboard to create space, however there was way too much to move and no where to move it to. Chloe and I then decided the motion room would be the best place and we could use the screen to bounce the light off, When we went to see the location, there was a class in there which meant we couldn't have a look around. Finally, we decided to try the uni building as our last resort. we thought about using the lift, thinking about the space and walls to bounce the light off, but then we realised we could not plug the lights in. To finish off for the day, Chloe and I went around the college and asked a number of people for their first reactions when seeing the doll. This was a really good way to get some feedback and we asked Delta, and some students in the canteen.

Today, we finally got the shillouette scene filmed. Firstly, we tried the motion room but Dave suggested that we need a background as in a shilloutte, you can still see some background and we would need this to make it more realistic instead of just a black room behind. We went to the animation room again and this time, moved some of the set walls around to find a background that would suit our film. We used two LED lights to bounce the light off and to create the shilouette of the doll. We tried different angles to see what could be done with this scene and not much direction had been mentioned about it. There was no action in this scene other than the doll just stood still (I leant my phone up behind the doll so she could stand free hand). Once we got this done, I got onto some editing, I had started some the night before at home. Chloe helped me out with this as our director had not uploaded the new storyboard yet and the old storyboard was very confusing with lots of crossing outs. I asked her to finish the new storyboard and I am waiting for this to be completed. To help in the meantime, Chloe showed me the shot list to help me understand the order of scenes and angles. Unfortunately, due to the first storyboard being wrong, some scenes have been missed out completely or names something else. For example, Scene 3 was where I was up to in editing, but on the clapper board, it had been named as scene 11 - This made it incredibly hard to refer back to my rushes log as it seemed all wrong due to the storyboard. This has given me a problem as editing will now take slightly longer as I am forever having to look through every folder, despite taking the time before hand to name all of the video clips. When I got home, I took the time to edit again - I did a few hours at home and finished with only 2/3 scenes left.

I made the survey monkey for myself and I saw that Mollie shared my post and captioned it as hers. Not only this, as few comments were made on my post about ways to improve our film and on one or two comments, I agreed with the person and then mollie and two of her friends started picking fights.
