I put together a putt putt course with scorecards and used equipment from the closet to make the holes more challenging and fun. Who doesn’t love putt putt?!

Innovative Practitioner

Being an innovative practitioner means to keep students active and engaged in learning. I feel that this is part of both reflective and diverse learning. Whenever possible I like to incorporate new ways of teaching so I can gauge where students are, how they learn, and keep them engaged in our activities.

I currently do not have much equipment or technology here in DPSCD so I have to get creative. I like to keep a routine while still making sure activities are diverse. So warm up, introduction and objectives, lesson, and then cool down and wrap up. Our lessons can be diverse. I like changing things and keeping simple baseline skills exciting as well.

There are so many ways to keep students in a gym setting engaged and continuously moving as that is our goal. There are so many different types of games and ways you can teach, it’s just finding out what works for you and the students. Adding new games and activities is exciting, I also take advantage of YouTube videos and music to incorporate into lessons.

I wish I had pictures but I made a very large scale disc golf course outside across the tennis courts, football field, and track. Typically the students don’t love just throwing a frisbee back and forth for a few days but I found a way to get them excited and engaged.

Goals as an Educator

Growing up, I cherished my time in many of my classes, fueled by wanting to learn, grow, and constantly improve while often supported by phenomenal teachers. While these instructors ignited my enthusiasm, it was the educators who overlooked our individual needs and treated us as mere children that ignited my desire to become a teacher.

As I delved into long-term substitute teaching, I quickly realized that my role extended beyond mere connection with students; it encompassed reaching out to those who struggled to engage with school work or instruction. These are the students I am most determined to support.

Over the years, I've tailored my teaching approach, making adaptations to my lessons to ensure that every student, regardless of their initial reluctance or apprehension, feels included and empowered. I strive to convey not only the significance of physical education but also education in general and where it can take you and why it is important.

It's imperative that we explore diverse avenues to involve every individual, irrespective of their abilities or circumstances. My aim is to serve as both an ally and an educator to these students, equipping them with skills and knowledge they can carry into the future.

Looking ahead, my aspirations include becoming fluent in American Sign Language to better connect with students facing language barriers. I wish to continue my education to pursue a masters in Social Work. Additionally, I envision establishing an Adapted Gym to provide tailored support for individuals in the public with special needs, facilitating their journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Ultimately, I aspire to share my insights and experiences as a college/university professor, nurturing the next generation of educators and advancing the field of education.

Reflective Practitioner

I feel confident that I am proficient in reflection of my practices. I use my assessments and responses from my students to reevaluate how the lessons are going and what may need to be changed or what worked well and should be used again. I even reevaluate between classes if things need to be adjusted for the next class. This helps to provide the best learning experience for my students.

Especially in an APE school there is constant adjusting even throughout the class. I use the time between classes not only to reflect on my teaching and the needs of my students but also how I am being of service to them and getting to know them.

As the year goes on my reflection and connection with the students creates a better teaching and educational experience. I also reflect among evaluations and assessments all help me see where there is need for improvement.

I have already had a diverse amount of students in different areas of Macomb and Oakland county. I have worked with mostly Kindergarten through 8th grade but in both private rural areas and public urban settings. I currently work with students with disabilities. I am fully committed to diversity of learners. It is really one of the most major parts of my previous positions. It helps to understand students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn how to be suit their needs. To achieve this takes time, practice, and the ability to adjust on the fly. You have to find what works for ALL of the students the best you can. To that, I commit.
