This is my ideal classroom! I am moving to a new school for the upcoming school year and I am hoping to have a flexible seating classroom where students can choose their seats. Options include standing desks, sitting on the floor, couches, etc. This would allow students to use Brain Rule 2, exercise by moving around the classroom to collaborate with their peers. If students get distracted or feel like they can't do their best work, they can move to a new work station. See more about flexible seating here: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/flexible-seating-student-centered-classroom-kayla-delzer. Flexible seating also allows students to become problem solvers. They have the opportunity to choose their ideal workspace, just like adults do.

A CLASSROOM DESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY & AGILITY

My ideal classroom would be designed from a very minimalist approach, with maximum space, flexibility and agility in mind. Equally important would be portable furnishings and tools that would permit optimal use of the space; providing varied options for collaboration and/or independent work. See here: https://vimeo.com/106206669
As suggested by Sekou International School, classrooms should not be rigid and should be designed with collaboration in mind. John Medina concurs as he posits that we are not used to sitting at a desk 8 hours per day, and that our minds develop and evolve as we move and solve problems though exploration. That said, I think it would great if classrooms were designed with a "sand box area" or "play pit" where students can safely explore through hands-on and even messy learning activities and with either the space for exercise equipment, or easy outdoor access for exercise breaks would be amazing.

The Do's and Don'ts of Flexible Seating at SFA STEM Academy 2016 https://youtu.be/_mbRrS7dX9k
I included this video for three reasons: 1) It was an example of teaching with multi-media; 2) More realistic to what I can continue to do in my classroom; and 3) I disagree with two “don’t” reminders and a seating option. This year, I had an ADHD student lay horizontal on the fitness ball as he read silently. Other students often chose to work under their desk. Each of them were on task. In the video, it also stated to find their seat “for the day.” I found that the students’ tasks often determined where or how they sat.

This image of chaos is close to my music classroom set up. Although this is a comic, with each student doing his/her own thing, some days feel like this. Most days are best when the controlled chaos exists within the context of learning and students have mobility and the ability to become self-directed learners and collaborators.

Brain Rules 1 & 2 state that the brain needs exercise and the brain has evolved. With this in mind, I would create a classroom that allows for movement and a safe place to work. My ideal classroom would be spacious, well-lit but not too bright (no more fluorescent lamps), and would have a large variation of seating arrangements. I would like balance balls on rings to keep the balls from rolling away, beanbags, sofa chairs, a “loft” bed (see video), large floor pillows, and tables of various heights and sizes for individuals and groups. I would also like an outdoor seating area where students can work in fresh air and hear the birds chirp. I would also include floor lamps and curtains to make the classroom feel more like home. https://youtu.be/CQ_nF6_5yBc
